When the sky turns grey, outdoor humidity reaches historic highs or, more simply, your home doesn’t have a dryer, freshly washed laundry risks turning into a real nightmare. The clothes remain wet for an interminable time, develop an unpleasant musty odor and transform the home environment into a humid greenhouse, with radiators or doors that offer themselves as makeshift drying racks. Instead of giving in to frustration, just a few targeted measures are enough to drastically reduce drying times and guarantee your wardrobe perfect integrity.
There is no need to resort to extravagant and dubious methods: let’s see six valid and concrete methods that really change the game when it comes to drying quickly, even in the absence of a dryer.
Make the most of the spin cycle: more spins, less water
The first and fundamental move takes place inside the washing machine. If your clothes allow it, set the spin cycle to the highest number of revolutions available, an elementary mechanical principle: each increase in rotation increases the centrifugal force that expels water from the fabrics. In fact, non-evaporated water is enemy number one.
A full spin cycle eliminates much more moisture than a standard program. If the garment is very delicate, you could consider a second short spin for that group of items, perhaps protecting them in a special bag. The science of evaporation is clear: the less water left in the fibers, the shorter the time it will take for residual heat or air to carry it away. A double spin, if done correctly, can cut drying times by up to 40%.
Roll out immediately and do not clump
As soon as the washing machine finishes, do not leave the clothes inside, not even for a few minutes, because the steam and heat retained in the drum would risk impregnating the clothes with bad odors, making the wash useless. Speed is essential.
When rolling out, proceed carefully:
Forced ventilation with a fan
Air movement is very important for evaporation: outdoors, the wind accelerates the process, indoors, we can simulate it. Place the drying rack in a room and direct a common fan turned on towards the laundry, so that the air current passes through the clothes in a regular and uniform way: by doing so you will significantly increase the rate of surface evaporation.
The fan does not heat the air, but moves it, breaking the layer of moisture-saturated air that forms around the wet fabric and replacing it with drier air.
The dehumidifier: your best ally
If there is no dryer, the dehumidifier is the best alternative ever. Its function is precisely to extract moisture from the ambient air, which is the same job that water must do to leave the fabric. In short, it behaves like a slower but extremely efficient version of the dedicated household appliance.
To obtain maximum results, limit the space for action, close the drying rack in a small room, such as a bathroom or laundry room, and turn on the dehumidifier. In this confined environment, the appliance will dramatically lower the relative humidity, almost halving laundry drying times in a safe and energy-sustainable way.
The absorbent towel for excess water
For particularly heavy garments or to speed up emergency drying, there is a simple trick that reduces water already during the drying phase.
Take a large bath towel and place your wet head on it, then wrap the towel around the dress, rolling everything up firmly, finally, apply vigorous pressure, for example by pressing with your hands or even sitting on it. The towel, thanks to its sponge structure, will immediately absorb a significant amount of water from the wet garment. Subsequently, spread it normally: thanks to this step you will be able to reduce the initial water load, significantly shortening the final times.
Radiators: use them wisely
If winter requires the use of heating, radiators can help, although direct support of the garments is not recommended, because direct contact ruins the fabric and the high temperature could generate an unpleasant odor.
To dry on the radiator correctly:
By applying these six methods, you will avoid the stress of laundry that doesn’t dry and you will be able to keep your clothes always fresh, clean and ready to wear, without resorting to a hairdryer or expensive energy consumption.
