I’ll explain step by step how to protect your roses from aphids and fertilize them with… a banana peel! They will bloom like never before

Rich in potassium, magnesium and vitamins, banana peels represent an excellent natural fertilizer, especially for growing roses. Many gardeners use them not only to make the soil more fertile, but also to protect these splendid flowers from aphids, parasites also known as rose lice.

How to prepare the peels

To use the peels for your roses, you must first cut them into strips or pieces with scissors or a knife and dry them in a dark, dry room or, alternatively, in the oven at a low temperature.

If you find bananas that are too blackened at home, you can also blend the pulp and peels together to make your own natural fertilizer.

As fertilizer: bury the husks

Before using natural fertilizer for rose bushes, it is advisable to delicately remove a few centimeters of soil around the bushes and then incorporate the banana peels into pieces and cover again with soil. Digging deeper and using a sprinkling of wood ash will also help ward off pests.

Alternatively, there are also those who prefer to boil the banana peels, let the mixture cool and pour it into the watering can.

Use the peels for mulch

Banana peels can also be used to mulch roses. Before using them you need to dry them in a dark, dry room or using the oven at low temperatures. Once you have accumulated a few kilos of dry peels, just blend them with a food processor and then use the mixture obtained, spreading it around the rose bushes, preferably in the spring season.

Finally, banana peels can be added to the compost to further nourish the rose bushes. Just throw the peels, preferably cut into small pieces (to speed up the composting process) into the compost bin, and mix them together with other peels and fruit and vegetable scraps and other organic material. The peels of this exotic fruit will make your compost even richer and the roses will benefit from it!
