There are places that don’t need large promotional campaigns to make their mark. One of these is Chiavenna, in the heart of Valchiavenna in Lombardy. Located north of Lake Como and surrounded by mountains that seem to have protected it for centuries, this town in the province of Sondrio preserves a surprising historical, cultural and naturalistic heritage.
The beauty begins even before reaching the historic center, when the walk leads towards the heart of the city accompanied by the sound of the water and the mountains that close the horizon. From the first impact, what strikes you is the atmosphere. The cobbled streets, Renaissance buildings and the slow flow of the Mera river create an elegant and authentic environment, far from the most crowded destinations of Alpine tourism.

The historic center between frescoed buildings and views of the Mera
Walking in the center of Chiavenna means walking through centuries of history. The decorated facades, soapstone portals and cozy squares tell the story of the past of a city that for centuries was an important commercial crossroads between Italy and Northern Europe. The heart of city life is Piazza Pestalozzi, characterized by its particular triangular shape and a historic sixteenth-century fountain. Streets full of shops, workshops and cafes branch off from here.

Among the most evocative corners is the famous bridge over the Mera. Looking out from the parapet you can observe the ancient houses built directly above the city walls, with the water flowing between rocks smoothed by time. It is one of the most photographed views of the entire Valchiavenna and it is easy to understand why from here there is a view that alone is worth the trip.

The Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo and the treasure kept in the village
As for monuments, the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo stands out, the main religious building in the valley. Its origins date back to the Early Middle Ages and inside it houses authentic masterpieces. Particularly fascinating is the baptismal font from 1156, carved from a single block of stone. But the real jewel is preserved in the nearby Treasure Museum, where the famous Peace of Chiavenna is located, an extraordinary gospel cover made of gold, enamel, pearls and precious stones. A medieval work considered among the most important in Europe.

The crotti, a unique phenomenon of Valchiavenna
One of the most characteristic aspects of the area are the famous crotti. These are not simply cellars, but natural cavities formed by the accumulation of enormous boulders that collapsed in remote times. The Sorèl constantly blows between the rocks, a natural air current that maintains stable temperatures throughout the year. Thanks to this phenomenon, cured meats, cheeses and wines are matured according to a tradition that has been handed down for generations and which represents one of the gastronomic symbols of the valley.
Palazzo Balbiani, the “castle” that dominates the historic center
Continuing the walk through the streets of Chiavenna you come across one of the most impressive buildings in the entire city: Palazzo Balbiani, often simply called “the Castle” by the inhabitants due to its severe and fortified appearance. Its history has its roots in the fifteenth century and is linked to the powerful family of the Balbiani counts, feudal lords of Valchiavenna.
Although the internal rooms were rebuilt in the twentieth century after the devastation suffered during the incursions of the Grisons, the building still retains the grandeur of the original structure. What immediately attracts attention are the mighty external walls, the two characteristic cylindrical towers and the long succession of windows that punctuate the façade. Even without being able to visit the interiors, now private property, the palace represents one of the most significant testimonies of Chiavenna’s noble past and contributes to defining the monumental profile of the historic centre.

An unusual stop: the Historical Gallery of the Fire Brigade
A discovery for us was the Historical Gallery of the Fire Brigade of Valchiavenna, a little-known but truly interesting reality. At first glance it might seem like a simple exhibition dedicated to firefighters, but upon entering you discover a true journey through the history of rescue.

Uniforms, period photographs, documents, firefighting equipment and historic vehicles tell the story of the evolution of the work of the firefighters during the twentieth century. Among the most fascinating pieces stands out a historic hand pump used for decades in interventions in the area. The visit allows you to learn about a lesser-known aspect of local history and represents a different stage than usual, capable of arousing the curiosity of adults and children.

Why Chiavenna is worth the trip
Chiavenna succeeds in something rare: combining history, art, nature and traditions without losing authenticity. Between the flowing river, noble palaces, medieval treasures and alpine landscapes, every corner tells a different story. It is a destination that does not try to amaze with special effects, but which conquers slowly, step by step. And for this very reason, once discovered, it is difficult to forget it.
