In March another bear died in Trentino but we only know it now, 7 months of unacceptable silence for which we ask for justice

The F32 bear is dead, a 9-year-old female, whose body was found last March 15th in low Val di Solein the province of Trento. We are only breaking the news now because it has only now been leaked. An unacceptable silence, for which animal rights associations are calling for justice and immediate clarifications.

We learn this – all dismayed – from a note from the Autonomous Province of Trento, published last October 9th, which spreads the news of the dismissal of the case, a case however never made public before due to “secrecy of investigation”.

The judge for preliminary investigations has ordered the dismissal of the investigation relating to the death of the F32 bear conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Trento – we read in the press release – The 9-year-old specimen was found on 15 March last in the woods of Bassa Val di Sole. Until this moment, the information on the discovery and the investigative activity were covered by investigative secrecy: the specialist operational unit of the Trentino Forestry Corps has supported the investigation activities coordinated by the judicial authority, in order to ascertain the causes of death and any possible related responsibility

In other words, a bear was found dead, no one said it as is generally and dutifully done, the investigations this time were carried out in silence for “secrecy of investigation” and after a good seven months we learn that the case has been archived.

The theme of bears is at the center of incessant debate in Trentino, where round tables, conferences and discussions continue on the number of specimens present in nature, on safety, showing doubts about a coexistence that in the eyes of citizens, mayors and politicians at the top of the northern region appears difficult if not impossible.

When you enter a forest you must know that you are not alone, that there are others who live in this space because you are not in your own garden

reiterated zoologist Davide Rufino during a conference held in Trento last February 1st, organized by campaign activists StopCasteller with the aim of bringing scientific opinions to the city regarding the bear issue in Trentino and clarifying the current situation.

Today, however, we learn that in one case the option of silence was chosen, a truly unacceptable silence.

Despite having concluded with an archiving, the investigation activity can only have been carried out due to the suspicion of poaching or other human responsibilities connected to the death of the bear – LAV thunders – The lack of transparency on the part of the Autonomous Province of Trento prevented us from learning the news and intervening promptly, as instead done in other similar cases, in which the contribution of the association was decisive for the carrying out of the investigations, for example example by convincing the Judge for Preliminary Investigations to reject the dismissal of the illegal killing of the bear F36

ENPA is also on the same line, which also recalls how the bears of Trentino are the unavailable heritage of the State, or how these animals belong to the community, not to individual administrative bodies.

A silence that cannot be accepted, which demands justice and immediate clarifications.

The death of a specimen like F32 weighs significantly on the already fragile balance of the bear population – writes the association – ISPRA has repeatedly reiterated that the loss of more than eight bears a year can compromise the survival of the group due to inbreeding. For this reason, Enpa of Rovereto has presented a formal request for access to the documents

Have we really reached this point?
