“A minute of silence for New York”, “The beginning of the end”, “Oriana Fallaci was right”, “The world is in the hands of Islamists”
How scary is Zohran Mamdani, just elected new mayor of New York. Panic, indignation and rapid-fire clichés after his landslide victory.
Some paint him as a terrorist. The comments of the writer who isn’t even American and is an immigrant make me smile. For New York it was a big surprise. Or maybe not: why be surprised that the citizens of the Big Apple chose Mamdani as mayor?
They forget one very small detail: New York is the city of immigrants par excellence. Without them, it wouldn’t even exist. And then, who would be the “pure New Yorkers”? Now almost impossible to find, given that the real Native Americans were exterminated centuries ago by the highly civilized West.
Yes, Mamdani is Muslim. So what? He has never made religion the center of his campaign and does not want to impose Sharia, nor impose the Islamic veil, as some fear. Just look at his wife, Rama Duwaji, an illustrator and activist who gives voice to Middle Eastern women and oppressed peoples such as the Palestinians.
Mamdami’s election campaign focused on concrete promises: free transport, affordable rent, universal kindergarten, higher taxes for the rich and more social equity. In short, no religious crusade. Zohran Mamdani won because he is prepared, credible and close to the people. Because he talks about rights and does not do so in an aggressive and overbearing tone. He Won offers an alternative to the toxic capitalism and boorishness on which people like Donald Trump have built their success. Will he be able to keep his promises? We’ll see. But one thing is certain: New York has chosen change. And from today, in the world capital of capitalism, a breath of socialism is blowing (which, coincidentally, makes the super rich tremble).
