Off the coast of Vanuatu, in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, a decidedly unique post office stands. It cannot be reached by car or on foot, but only swimming.
The office, which was opened in 2003, is under water at a depth of 3 meters, on the back of the Hideaway Island, in Oceania, island rented to the owners of the Hideaway Island Resort. It is the only underwater post office in the world.
Made of fiberglass, it opens only one hour a day and allows you to send waterproof and customized postcards all over the world. Each of them is marked by a stamp in relief, a valid “underwater” alternative to the ink.
The opening hours are exhibited on the beach of Hideaway Island and a flag reports the presence of an operator on duty. In his absence, it is still possible to send the postcards independently through the underwater mailbox or order it directly online.
The office was created with the aim of encouraging visitors to explore the wonders of the underwater world of this extraordinary area and at the same time sensitize people on the consequences of climate change.
Through this unique experience, which allows you to swim between magnificent coral reefs, tropical fish and caves of extraordinary beauty, we want to underline the importance of safeguarding this incredible natural heritage, so that it is not lost forever.
