Indian artist transforms the pedestrian stripes into the most ignored work of art in the world

On the occasion of the national month of road safety in India, Volvo Cars collaborated with the artist Subodh Kerkar to raise public awareness of the importance of pedestrian crossings. Kerkar has created a unique artistic installation: a pedestrian crossing hand -painted and signed with his name.

This project aimed to highlight how essential elements for road safety, such as pedestrian crossing, are often ignored both by drivers and pedestrians. During the presentation event, attended by art enthusiasts, journalists and representatives of the traffic authorities, a video was shown documenting the social experiment.

Motorists rarely stop

In the movie it was observed how, over a few days, vehicles rarely stopped to allow the crossing of pedestrians on the artistic pedestrian passage. This behavior has highlighted the paradox that works of art exhibited in galleries attract attention, while vital road signs are neglected.

The initiative had the aim of promoting greater awareness regarding the safety of pedestrians and compliance with road standards. Every day numerous people cross roads trusting in the protection offered by the pedestrian stripeswho often do not receive the attention due from motorists.

The campaign, widespread through social media by Volvo Cars India, quickly gained popularity, accumulating millions of views and stimulating discussions on road safety. This collaboration between an car manufacturer and a committed artist underlined the importance of reconsidering road behaviors and recognizing the crucial role of the pedestrian crossing in the protection of pedestrians.

The pedestrian crossings with a three -dimensional effect

Similar initiatives have been made in other parts of the world. For example, in Iceland, Street Artist Gusti has created pedestrian stripes with a three -dimensional effect To induce motorists to slow down, thus increasing the safety of pedestrians. These projects demonstrate how art can be used as an effective tool to positively influence road users’ behavior and improve urban safety.

In addition, recent studies have explored the use of techniques of Redesign road to improve safety. The research “Road Redesign Technique Achied Enhanced Road Safety by Intapainting with a Diffusion Model” offers the use of diffusion models to modify road elements in order to reduce the probability of accidents. These approaches combine art, technology and urban planning to create safer environments for all road users.
