There are those who try to limit time on social media with kind notifications, motivational graphics or guilt-filled messages. Then there is Cat Gatekeeper, a browser extension which takes a much more direct approach: place a giant orange cat in front of you which takes up almost the entire screen and physically prevents you from continuing to scroll.
The idea comes from the Japanese indie group ZOKUZOKU and by the developer known online as @konekone2026which showed how the project worked on X. In just a few hours the demo went viral, garnering millions of views and transforming a simple Chrome plugins in one of the most commented tech phenomena of the moment.
How Cat Gatekeeper works
The mechanism is deliberately simple. The extension monitors how much time is spent on platforms considered high risk doomscrollingincluding YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and X. When you exceed the set limit, the cat enters the scene without any warning. No windows to close or “Remind me later” buttons. The feline appears on the display, lies down on top of the feed and remains there for the duration of the mandatory break.
By default The timer goes off after 60 minutes of use and imposes a five-minute stopalthough both values can be changed by the user. The effect recalls a situation well known to those who live with a cat: trying to work while the animal decides to the keyboard is the perfect place to rest. Except here the behavior is transformed into a digital tool designed to interrupt endless sessions on social media.

An ironic idea that exploits behavioral design
The strong point of Cat Gatekeeper it is not the advanced technology, but the way it uses the so-called digital friction. Instead of relying on the user’s willpower, the extension creates an obstacle that is impossible to ignore. And it is precisely the irony of the interaction that makes it effective. According to what is indicated on the Chrome Web Store, the plugin does not collect personal data and currently only works on Google Chromeboth on Windows and Mac.
The developer describes it as “The cutest forced break app in the world“, a definition that perfectly explains the tone of the project. Behind the viral success there is also an interesting detail: Cat Gatekeeper doesn’t promise to make your life better or turn yourself into a productivity machine. It just interrupts the automatic flow of social media long enough to remind you that maybe you had something else to do. And apparently, coming from a huge orange cat, the message works surprisingly well.
