Instant organic polenta recalled due to toxic alkaloids: here are the brands and batches to avoid

The Ministry of Health has recalled two batches of IRIS brand organic instant polenta due to the presence of toxic alkaloids

It’s autumn and we’re back to enjoying warm, comforting dishes like polenta. But be careful if you have one at home Organic instant polenta from the IRIS brand. The Ministry of Health has in fact recently issued the recall of two batches of this product.

The reason for the alert is the presence of tropane alkaloids (atropine and scopolamine)potentially harmful chemical substances, in quantities exceeding permitted limits.

The lots affected by the recall are the following:

Both batches are packaged in 500 gram packages. The product is distributed by the company ASTRA Bio Srl, while production is carried out by La Grande Ruota Srl, with a factory in Dello, in the province of Brescia.

As we were already saying, tropane alkaloids could be present in these batches of instant polenta. These substances, naturally present in some plants, can cause disorders such as headaches, nausea, dizziness and, in the most serious cases, nervous system problems. The fact that they are found in polenta is probably due to the accidental contamination of corn kernels during the harvest or production phase.

As a precaution, the Ministry invites anyone who purchased the indicated lots not to consume the product and to return it to the point of sale to obtain a replacement or refund.
