Italy show at the European Fencing Championships: shower of individual and team medals in France

In fencing we continue to write pages of history: gold, silver and bronze medals are pouring in at the European Championships underway in Anthony (France) from 16 to 21 June, crowned by the victory – perhaps the best – of yesterday 19 June, with the historic gold in the men’s epee team against the hosts. Immense!

Gold in men’s team and individual épée

The men’s epee is ours: the first medal arrived on the first day, with Simone Mencarellia 23 year old from Turin who beat the Israeli in the final Alon Sarid 15-12, thus putting a wonderful gold medal around his neck.

And it doesn’t end here, because the sword also triumphed in the team competition, beating France in the final, which is hosting the competition, with a clear 45-30: Davide Di Veroli, Matteo Galassi, Andrea Santarelli and (again) Simone Mencarelli they are European champions.

Silver in the individual foil (with the infinite Arianna Errigo)

Immense, timeless and historic Arianna Errigo: the Italian fencer reached the European podium for the 23rd time in her career, stopped only in the final by the Ukrainian Olga Sopit (15-8). This silver medal is an extraordinary victory for a truly infinite champion.

I am still a medal winner, many years after the first time in 2009, and I succeeded here with my children, my parents, my husband, after a very long and hard-fought race, in which I gave everything. I can only be happy

Bronze in the women’s team sabre

Incredible, unexpected and splendid bronze in the women’s sabre: Michela Battiston, Mariella Viale, Manuela Spica and Claudia Rotili defeated Hungary in the 3rd and 4th place final, taking the third step of the podium.

The medal was won by a very young quartet, who overcame Romania and Poland, and also managed to keep up with world champion France in the semi-final. And that gives us hope for the future.

Bronze in the individual men’s foil

As if that wasn’t enough, we also put our signature on the men’s foil: Thomas Martinia 23-year-old Tuscan carabiniere, won a splendid bronze in the individual competition, giving another podium, in some ways unexpected considering an injury that affected the athlete’s entire race, to our country.

I am very happy for this medal on my debut in a European Championship – commented the foil player – I gave my all, despite an injury that did not allow me to shoot at my best, but happiness prevails for this podium which gave me a splendid emotion, here with a group of teammates who are first and foremost friends. A year ago I was in Genoa in the stands, cheering for them, and now I have fulfilled a dream

Today June 20th and tomorrow 21st more days of competitions, and who knows if our medal table will become even richer.
