After months of rumors and speculation, it’s official: Glee is preparing to reopen its doors to conquer both old fans and new audiences. Disney+ and Hulu have in fact ordered the production of the reboot of the iconic musical series, entrusting the project to the production house 20th Television. Coordinating the work will once again be the historic creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, ready to bring back the atmosphere of the McKinley Institute in Lima, Ohio. The debut of the new production is expected on the small screen during 2027.
The decision to bring the franchise back to life comes from the show’s renewed success on digital platforms, where it still garners 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The project will aim to combine nostalgia for the original work, broadcast for 6 seasons from 2009 to 2015, with the themes of contemporary adolescence. Among the symbolic songs ready to make spectators dream again are milestones such as Don’t Stop Believin’, Teenage Dream, River Deep, Mountain High And smooth Criminal.
The new plot between legacy and new talents
Although the official plot remains confidential, the most accredited narrative hypothesis concerns a sequel focused on a new generation of students ready to take up the legacy of the famous New Directions choir. The story will maintain the social setting that made the brand famous, addressing topics such as inclusion, LGBTQ+ rights, mental health and disability through musical numbers and youth stories.
It remains to be clarified whether the events will focus solely on new talents or whether they will leave ample space for historical faces as exceptional guest stars. The strength of the series will lie in the balance between school rivalries, romantic dynamics and the search for personal redemption, keeping intact the original formula that guaranteed the show’s triumph with 6 Emmy Awards.
The negotiations with the cast and the painful absences
The involvement of the group of historical actors represents one of the most delicate points for the production. Ryan Murphy confirmed that he has already contacted around 10 performers from the original series, receiving enthusiastic responses. Lea Michele gave her utmost availability to return as Rachel Berry, while Chris Colfer expressed words of affection for the show while recalling the emotional complexity of a return after the tragic death of Naya Rivera.
The new course of the series will inevitably have to deal with the painful deaths that have affected production over the years. In addition to Naya Rivera, who passed away in 2020, the story will have to pay homage to the memory of Cory Monteith, who passed away in 2013, and Mark Salling, who died in 2018. In addition to the actors mentioned, the historical cast also included Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Dianna Agron, Amber Riley, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz and Heather Morris.
