The Petacciato landslide had raised fears of a long paralysis of the Adriatic coast, but the situation evolved more rapidly than expected. Shortly before 12.15pm today, the A14 Bologna-Taranto motorway was reopened in the stretch between Vasto Sud and Termoli towards Bari and between Poggio Imperiale and Vasto Sud towards Pescara.
A fundamental reactivation for national traffic, made possible thanks to a temporary solution: vehicles travel on the northern carriageway with two-way traffic, using one lane in each direction. The choice was dictated by the need to keep traffic away from the landslide front, which is still under observation. Despite this, the restoration allowed the reopening of one of the most important connections between Central and Southern Italy, reducing the impact on mobility and logistics.
Nonstop work and interventions in record times
The reopening came after intense activity that began the previous afternoon. Technicians and operators worked tirelessly to make the roadway safe, authorized after the latest results of the geological monitoring. Over 100 workers and dozens of vehicles were involved in the restoration operations, with the aim of reactivating traffic in the shortest possible time. The activities will continue in the next few hours to allow the reopening of the southern carriageway, which is still closed.
The railway also restarts on Friday
After the motorway, the next step concerns rail transport. The gradual reactivation of the Pescara–Foggia line is expected from 6am tomorrow, with reduced speed and operational limitations. The technicians will continue monitoring the terrain to ensure the safety of the convoys, while the recovery will take place progressively.
The simultaneous blockade of the motorway, railway and state road had created a real logistical fracture, forcing heavy vehicles and motorists to make detours of up to hundreds of kilometres. The reopening of the A14 therefore represents a first return to normality, even if the phase remains transitory, hoping at the same time that the times have not accelerated too much and that the restoration of traffic is not premature.
Emergency resolved but continuous monitoring
The landslide was judged to be less serious than expected, but monitoring of the ground movement continues. The authorities keep the monitoring system active to avoid new risks and allow the complete restoration of traffic. The reopening in record time avoided a long interruption of the Adriatic network, but caution remains high. Traffic continues to flow on a temporary setup as work continues to bring the motorway back to full operation as quickly as possible.
