Massacre of cattle and horses in Lazio: animals shot to “reduce road accidents”

In the area between Montelanico and Carpineto Romano, in the heart of the province of Rome, there is an ongoing affair that is causing indignation among citizens and associations. Dozens of cattle and horses are killed with firearms, as part of a containment plan approved and financed by the Lazio Region.

According to what was reported by LNDC Animal Protection, the operations would not take place in isolated areas, but even a short distance from homes, with images showing animals wounded or brutally killed, in a scene unworthy of a civilized country.

The justification of the Lazio Region

The Lazio Region justifies the intervention as a safety measure to reduce road accidents caused by wandering animals. However, the inhabitants of the area tell of another reality: Via Carpinetana, where many accidents would have occurred, is without lighting and has never been made safe.

For LNDC, the real cause is not the presence of animals, but administrative inefficiency and the absence of structural interventions. The association speaks openly of “institutionalized barbarism”: public funds used to finance killings, instead of promoting ethical recovery plans.”We are targeting victims of abandonment, not threats to be eliminated” declared Piera Rosati, president of LNDC.

The appeal to the TAR

LNDC has already initiated an appeal to the TAR of Lazio against the resolution that assigns the contributions to the municipalities involved. The hearing is scheduled for December 3, but the organization has requested an urgent stay to stop what it calls “a massacre financed with public money”.

According to the association, the plan conflicts with the principles of Legislative Decree 146/2001, which requires public authorities to guarantee animal welfare. The Region’s strategy, states LNDC, represents an ethical and political failure, born from years of absent controls and ineffective management of the territory.

The request: stop the culling and find alternatives

LNDC calls for the immediate withdrawal of funds, the stop of culling operations and the opening of an urgent technical table to find solutions based on prevention and respect for animal life. The association also proposes to establish a public reception and rehabilitation facility for seized or abandoned animals, to definitively end the emergency season. Shooting defenseless creatures is not management, it is violence.
