In Mexico an unusual initiative is making us discuss: the Iglesia del Final de Los Tiempos has put on sale plot of land in paradise. For a starting figure of 100 dollars per square meterthe faithful can ensure a place in the afterlife, with the possibility of also paying in installments or by credit cards.
According to the church leader, the prophet Andrés de la Barra, the idea was born in 2017 after having received an authorization Divine during a mystical experience. Since then, this activity has yielded millions of dollars and has attracted the attention of many believers, but also numerous criticisms.
The Church offers a certificate which guarantees the purchase of a plot in the celestial kingdom. This document, according to what was declared, is “blessed and certified by Jehovah”, complete with a divine signature and the official seal of the Church.
In addition, buyers would have the opportunity to rest eternally next to biblical figures of the Old Testamentlike Davide, Isaiah and Ezekiel. With the growing interest, the price per square meter has already increased a 250 dollars. However, to maintain the validity of the ultraterrena property, the faithful must lead one Christian life in line with the teachings of the Church.
Many criticisms: “It is a commodification of faith”
This initiative has raised many perplexities, especially within the Catholic Church, which recently adopted one more rigorous location towards phenomena related to visionaries and mystical apparitions. The Vatican invited the faithful to prudence, underlining the importance of discerning between authentic spiritual experiences and potential deceptions.
The sale of “seats in paradise” was interpreted by many as one commodification of faithin contrast to the Christian principle according to which salvation is a free gift of God and not something that can be purchased.
Also on social media, the news generated conflicting reactions. Many users have expressed indignation, defining the initiative blasphemous and deceptive. Some comments show that Jesus offered redemption without asking for anything in return, while others warn the faithful from the risk of falling victims of religious manipulations.
Yet, despite the criticisms, the Mexican Church continues to attract new buyersdemonstrating how much the desire for an eternal life and the fear of death can influence people’s choices. It remains to be seen if the religious authorities will take measures against this controversial practice.
