From 2026, Italian motorways are preparing to become increasingly intelligent thanks to Navigard, an innovative platform that integrates sensors, radar, high definition cameras and artificial intelligence algorithms. The system is designed to improve road safety, optimize traffic flow and support drivers with real-time information.
How the Navigard system works
Navigard works thanks to an integrated network of devices that detect speed, position of vehicles and infringements, such as prohibited overtaking, wrong-way vehicles or violations of the weight limits of heavy vehicles. The data collected is transmitted to an operations center, where the Traffic Police can intervene promptly. Furthermore, the system monitors tunnels, the transport of dangerous goods and digital tachograph data to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
The project includes highways capable of communicating with self-driving cars and providing useful information to drivers. Sensors and lights automatically detect accidents or stationary vehicles, communicating with the authorities. Service areas become smart, toll booths can recover energy from braking vehicles, while drones monitor traffic and the state of infrastructure. The flooring is also technological, communicating with the operators to plan optimal maintenance.
Advanced control and security
Navigard includes advanced functions such as the Safety Tutor, which detects the average and instantaneous speed of vehicles, and the dynamic weighing system, which checks the weight of vehicles in transit. Violations trigger automatic alerts, with communications to drivers via variable message and flashing signs, preventing accidents and safeguarding infrastructure.
Thanks to Navigard, the motorway network aims to become safer, more efficient and sustainable. The combination of AI, sensors and cameras allows precise traffic management, effective accident prevention and constant monitoring of heavy vehicles and dangerous goods. The ultimate goal is to ensure a smoother, safer and smarter travel experience for all users.
