An afternoon of unfortunately now ordinary atmospheric madness has torn away the tranquility of Northern Italy, concentrating an impressive discharge of meteorological energy in just under an hour. The violence of the phenomena pulverized car windshields and stripped the roofs of homes.
Governor Luca Zaia confirmed that the main target of the storm systems was the foothills of the upper Venetian plain, with peaks of destruction located in the Alto Vicenza area and in the Alta Marca Trevigiana. In these areas the clouds have discharged hailstones the size of tennis balls, whitening the countryside and urban centers to the point of simulating an unseasonal winter snowfall.
The Veronese and Treviso areas were particularly affected
Moving towards the province of Verona, the fury of the gusts of air literally took off the roofs of several houses in the municipality of Bussolengo, while the coastal area of Lake Garda found itself dealing with dozens of trees uprooted by the force of the wind.
The devastation also closely affected the province of Treviso, where firefighters were inundated with calls in the municipalities of Asolo, Montebelluna, San Zenone degli Ezzelini, Ponte di Piave, Oderzo, Altivole, San Polo di Piave and Vazzola.
The fury of the elements did not spare Venice, imposing a total block on the circulation of vaporettos in the lagoon and forcing numerous commercial flights to divert to other airports due to the impossibility of landing safely.
Friuli in the dark and the flash flood that paralyzed Udine
The disturbance moved rapidly eastwards, hitting Friuli Venezia Giulia with pinpoint ferocity starting from late afternoon. Shortly after 6.30 pm, a storm cell of mammoth proportions dropped a veritable bomb of water and ice on the capital of Udine, paralyzing city traffic in just a few minutes.
The city’s streets turned into torrents, causing widespread flooding of basements and garages, while broken branches and torn road signs crushed parked cars. The operations center of the Friulian command recorded over one hundred requests for help in just thirty minutes, forcing the firefighters to retain personnel on duty to manage the emergency.
The atmospheric instability also generated isolated tornadoes that hit the entire regional territory, causing extensive electricity blackouts due to damage to medium and low voltage overhead lines. In the Pordenone area, rescuers worked tirelessly to remove unsafe trees lying on roadways or falling directly onto the roofs of houses.
Railways in chaos
The transport infrastructure suffered the hardest blow: rail traffic on the strategic Brenner-Verona line was completely suspended from 6pm in the stretch between Migliara and Verona. Many passenger convoys, including several Frecciarossa trains, remained stuck on the line waiting for Italian Railway Network technicians, forcing transport companies to undertake a complex journey rescheduling operation.
Tragedy in South Tyrol: an elderly man lost his life
The scope of this massive summer anomaly also extended to neighboring regions, leaving behind a trail of accidents and unfortunately one victim. In Trentino Alto Adige, the province of Bolzano was hit by landslides and heavy flooding.
The most serious tragedy occurred in Bressanone, where an elderly man lost his life after falling into the swollen Isarco river, dragged away by the impetuous current before his body was recovered by rescuers near a city bridge.
A supercell also hit Lombardy
In the same hours, a superstorm storm system hit Lombardy, concentrating its maximum intensity in a thirty-minute band between lower Varesotto, Como, Brianza and the hinterland north of Milan. The cities of Busto Arsizio, Legnano and Castellanza were hit by violent hailstorms that damaged the vegetation and golf courses of Brianza, while in Como and Blevio mud and debris invaded public streets.

The most critical consequences were recorded in Garbagnate Milanese, where the collapse of monumental trees on the road blocked ambulance access to the emergency room, forcing the firefighters to work urgently to clear the gaps. In Novate Milanese, the specialists of the SAF unit had to free a motorcyclist trapped among the fallen branches in via Brodolini, while in the municipality of Cormano, to be precise in the hamlet of Brusuglio, the sheet metal roof of a building was torn away by the gusts and fell on top of parked cars, while transport to the Milan Cadorna station suffered heavy delays.
Nothing but “bad weather”. The climate crisis is hitting harder and harder.
