The famous actress Natalie Portman, known for her vegan commitment and animal protection, has officially invested in the sustainable fashion sector. Portman has joined Uncaged Innovations, an American startup specializing in next-generation vegetable leathers, with the aim of introducing their Elevate material to the world of luxury.
A completely vegetable alternative leather
The material developed by Uncaged Innovations is made from grains such as corn, soy and wheat, completely avoiding plastic and animal derivatives. It’s biodegradable, certified plastic-free and designed to reduce fashion’s environmental impact. Elevate offers durability and quality equal to traditional leather, but with drastically lower consumption of water, energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
The environmental impact of traditional leather
Animal leather production is energy-intensive and water-intensive, linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss and animal exploitation. Conventional leather has a high carbon footprint, with around 110kg of CO2e per square metre, while plant-based alternatives reduce emissions by up to 95%. Plastic-based synthetic leather also poses serious problems: it releases toxic microplastics, contributes to global emissions, and takes hundreds of years to degrade.
Towards a more ethical fashion
Portman joins Uncaged Innovations as a strategic partner, bringing visibility and credibility to the startup’s mission. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of animal-free and sustainable materials in luxury fashion, involving both consumers and companies in the sector. Already used for the interiors of Hyundai and Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, Elevate vegetable leather could become a reference for the future of sustainable fashion, helping to decarbonise a sector known for its high ecological footprint.
This investment reflects a growing trend: combining biotechnology and design to create regenerative materials that respect the planet without sacrificing aesthetics and performance. Portman highlights how, as a vegan, this project allows her to amplify her animal protection mission, while the Uncaged Innovations team aims to educate the public on the importance of high-quality, sustainable alternatives. The collaboration symbolizes a concrete step towards a more ethical and environmentally friendly fashion sector.
