Pensions 2027, checks increase but you will retire later: here’s what changes

2027 is preparing to be a year of changes for millions of Italian pensioners and workers. On the one hand, the allowances will increase due to inflation, on the other hand, the moment in which it will be possible to retire will be delayed, even if initially only by a month.

In practice, pensions are revalued to protect purchasing power, while retirement requirements increase in relation to life expectancy. With the new budget law still under discussion, however, further changes could arrive.

Here’s what we know so far.

Pensions 2027, how the revaluation works

Every year pensions are adjusted to the increase in prices through the so-called automatic equalizationa mechanism designed to limit the loss of purchasing power caused by inflation. The current system provides three revaluation bands:

In 2026 the minimum INPS payment is equal to 611.85 euros per month. The full revaluation therefore concerns the pension portion up to 2,447.40 euros. For higher allowances, the increase is calculated by applying different percentages to the various bands.

How much will pensions increase in 2027?

To know the actual amounts we will have to wait for the interministerial decree which will establish the official revaluation percentage. Meanwhile, according to preliminary ISTAT estimates for September 2026, inflation acquired for the current year has reached 3.1%. A figure that does not necessarily coincide with the pension revaluation, but which allows us to carry out some indicative simulations.

Assuming an increase of 3.1%, the monthly gross checks could vary as follows:

These are examples based on 2026 ranges, not increases already approved. The final figures will depend on the official percentage and the new revaluation thresholds.

Minimum pensions

In 2026 the ordinary minimum payment is 611.85 euros per month, but thanks to the extraordinary increase of 1.3% it can reach 619.80 euros. This additional measure, introduced in 2023 and subsequently extended, is currently not confirmed for 2027.

Assuming an ordinary revaluation of 3.1%, the minimum pension would rise to approximately 630.82 euros. Compared to the current 619.80 euros, the actual increase would therefore be approximately 11 euros per month.

The next budget law could however intervene by extending or modifying the increase.

From 2027 he will retire one month later

The other change concerns the retirement age. From 1 January 2027 the ordinary requirement will go from the current 67 years to 67 years and one month, and then reach 67 years and three months in 2028.

The adjustment is linked to the increase in life expectancy and was implemented by INPS with circular no. 28 of 16 March 2026.

The changes also concern early pensions:

Typology 2027 requirements
Old age pension 67 years and 1 month
Ordinary advance payment, men 42 years and 11 months of contributions
Ordinary advance payment, women 41 years and 11 months of contributions
Contributory old age with at least 5 years of effective contributions 71 years and 1 month

For the ordinary old-age pension, at least 20 years of contributions are generally required.

For those who started paying contributions in 1996, the contributory early pension will require 64 years and one month of age and at least 20 years and one month of actual contributions, in addition to reaching the minimum allowance threshold established by law.

More money, but also more years of work

The picture that emerges for 2027 is that of a social security system called upon to reconcile two needs: protecting the purchasing power of pensioners and guaranteeing the sustainability of spending in the long term.

But the effects will not be the same for everyone. For those who receive a low pension, even a few euros can make a difference in the family budget. And for those who have a physically demanding job, even an extra month of activity can take its toll.

The certainty, for now, concerns the increase in pension requirements already provided for by the legislation. To find out the definitive increases in allowances and any new measures to support the lowest pensions, we will have to wait for the next provisions and the 2027 budget law.
