In February 2026, the new revaluation of pensions comes into force, the mechanism used to adjust allowances to the trend of inflation. For this year the equalization index has been set at 1.4 percent, a value that aims to defend purchasing power, especially for those who receive the lowest amounts. The adjustment, however, is not the same for everyone: the Italian system continues to work in stages, rewarding the lowest pensions and progressively reducing the increase for the highest ones.
The three increase bands
The equalization mechanism involves three distinct levels. Checks up to four times the minimum salary, equal to 2,413.60 euros gross, obtain the full adjustment of 1.4 percent. For those who place themselves between four and five times the minimum, therefore up to 3,017.00 euros gross, the increase drops to 1.26 percent. Above this threshold, for the highest pensions, the revaluation is further reduced to 1.05 percent. This system serves to concentrate resources on the lowest social security incomes, limiting the impact on the most substantial payments.
How much do the checks increase?
In practical terms, monthly increases range from a few euros up to around fifty euros gross. A pension of 1,000 euros receives an increase of around 14 euros per month, while with 1,500 euros gross the increase rises to just over 21 euros. Anyone who receives 3,000 euros gets an increase of around 41 euros, calculated by applying different rates on the various parts of the allowance. For a pension of 4,000 euros, however, the increase reaches approximately 51.70 euros gross per month. However, the real benefit is often reduced by the so-called fiscal drag, i.e. the combined effect of Irpef and local surtaxes, which in recent years has eroded a substantial part of the nominal increases.
The new amount of minimum pensions
Particular attention is paid to minimal treatment. In 2026 the base rises to 611.80 euros, to which is added an extraordinary increase of 1.3 percent, bringing the total amount to 619.80 euros per month. Compared to 2025, the actual increase is around 3 euros per month, a value that has sparked many discussions, given the distance between inflation and the real improvement in income.
Payment dates in 2026
From an operational point of view, INPS payments have returned to regularity since February. The credit is scheduled for Monday 2 February both at the bank and at the post office. The exceptions are May, with payment on May 2nd at the Post Office and May 4th at the bank, and August, when the pension will arrive on August 1st for the Italian Post Office and on August 3rd for banking institutions.
