Quality of life: these are the Italian cities where people live best (you don’t expect the first one)

Bergamo conquer the summit of ranking by quality of life in Italy in the 2024 edition of the annual survey of Sun 24 Hoursa historic result for the Lombardy province. Bergamo’s rise is particularly significant considering that in 2020, during the most difficult period of the Covid-19 pandemic, he was in 52nd place.

This year, the city surpassed regular competitors such as Trento and Bolzanowhich are positioned in second and third place respectively, demonstrating constant growth. This achievement is an incentive for other Italian provinces to invest in sustainability, services and culture to improve the well-being of their citizens.

The survey evaluates the well-being of the Italian provinces by analyzing 90 indicators divided into six key categories: wealth and consumption; business and work; environment and services; demography, society and health; justice and security; culture and free time. This broad spectrum of analysis makes the ranking a useful tool for understanding the socio-economic dynamics of the country.

Rome is only in 59th place

The large Italian cities continue to show signs of difficulty. Milanwhile remaining in a relatively high position (12th), loses four positions compared to last year. Bolognathe only large city in the top 10, drops to ninth placerecording a drop of seven positions.

Rome and Florence suffer an even more marked collapse: the capital falls to 59th place (-24 positions), while Florence slips to 36th (-30 positions) after years of stability in the top 10. Also Turin loses ground, placing itself at the 58th place.

The top 10 is dominated by medium-sized provincesparticularly those in the north-east. In addition to Bergamo, Monza and Brianza (4th), Cremona, Udine (winner of 2023), Verona, Vicenza and Ascoli Piceno stand out, closing the list of the top ten. This confirms the dominance of the north, with three provinces from Lombardy, two from Trentino-Alto Adige and two from Veneto.

In the Nooninstead, the situation remains critical. Reggio Calabria comes in last place, preceded by Naples and Crotonea sign of the persistent structural difficulties that characterize these areas.
