An equestrian parade with 1,500 horses took place in Manizales
Animal rights senator Andrea Padilla praised the citizens of Riosucio for showing an alternative way of celebrating, without resorting to violence or the oppression of animals. However, there has been no shortage of criticism from those who are fond of equestrian traditions and believe that horses are an integral part of local festivities.
In fact, it took place in parallel in Manizales, a few hours away one of the most traditional equestrian parades in the countrywith the participation of over 1,500 horses. This year, thanks to pressure from animal rights activists, they have been introduced new control measuresincluding the prohibition of alcohol consumption and the participation of minors.
Checks along the route have helped reduce accidents and improve the welfare of the animals involved, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem barbaric and senseless practice which saw approximately 200,000 spectators attend. An event that nevertheless divided public opinion. On the one hand there are those who appreciate the cultural and traditional aspect of the parades, on the other, those who support the need to reform these practices to protect animals.
The inflatable horse parade in Riosucio represents an important step towards a more ethical approach to celebrationshoping that similar initiatives can be replicated in other festivals promoting a more respectful future for all living beings.
