THE’European Union accelerates the regulation of the digital world with a new measure intended to change the way in which online services are accessed. The President of the European Commission announced the launch of an age verification appdesigned to protect minors and make more secure access to sensitive platforms and content. The objective is to create a common European standard, preventing each country from developing different and difficultly compatible systems.

How the system works

The app will only issue a minimal certificatewithout tracking user activity. The model is inspired by the principles ofopen sourcewith a verifiable public code, and is part of the Digital Services Act, which imposes greater protection obligations for minors online.

A common European project

The initiative aims to reduce regulatory fragmentation between the 27 Member States, creating a single and interoperable system. The definitive technical mechanism will be defined in the coming months, with the aim of diffusion by the summer.
