The distribution of live chicks as an Easter gift to the families of children in a private nursery school in Giugliano in Campania has outraged and shaken consciences. Fortunately, however, a happy ending has arrived for the animals. In fact, after the reports, the Campania Region intervened by activating the veterinary services of the ASL, which took charge of the chicks to check their health conditions and transfer them to suitable facilities. The objective is to guarantee animal welfare and health safety, preventing chicks from remaining in unsuitable environments.
Checks and transfer to a protected facility
The animals will be subjected to a census and health checks with the involvement of the Istituto Zooprophylattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno. After the checks, the chicks will be sent to a protected structure in the Caserta area, where they will be able to live in adequate conditions. According to initial reconstructions, the animals would have been purchased regularly, but their distribution in school settings has raised regulatory critical issues, since a school cannot keep animals without the requirements established by law.
The educational theme and the responsibility of schools
The story has inevitably opened a reflection on the educational role of schools. Indeed, the distribution of live animals as gifts risks conveying the idea that they can be treated as symbolic objects or teaching tools. In reality, chicks require specific environmental conditions, controlled temperature, adequate nutrition and constant care, elements that are difficult to guarantee in unstructured contexts.
Health risks and animal welfare
In addition to the ethical aspect, a public health issue also emerges. The improper management of live animals in environments frequented by minors can lead to health risks, especially in the absence of adequate veterinary checks and hygiene protocols. Furthermore, chicks are particularly vulnerable and can experience stress and high mortality if not kept in correct conditions.
We must teach respect for living beings
The recovery of the animals represents an immediate solution, but this cannot make us forget the serious act committed. Education must pass through awareness, responsibility and protection of animal life and the school itself must (or at least should) teach the little ones respect for living beings, not their commodification.
