The fountain in Piazza Mazzini becomes the “home” of mother Germana and her 11 ducklings: Rome closes it to protect them

In the daily traffic of Rome, between horns and frenetic pace, there is a corner that has suddenly changed pace. The fountain in Piazza Mazzini has become the center of a story made of tenderness, attention and respect for nature. The protagonist is a female mallard, affectionately nicknamed “Mamma Germana”, who has chosen this body of water as a refuge for her brood. Having arrived a few days ago, the family immediately caught the attention of residents, passers-by and onlookers. An unusual presence that transformed a busy square into a small natural observatory.

The fountain becomes a home

The fountain is no longer just an urban element, but a real temporary habitat. During the day, the ducklings swim and take shelter from the spring heat, while at night they huddle next to their mother, protected between the decorative structures of the fountain. The brood, initially made up of eleven babies, however suffered a loss. One of the ducklings sadly died after being sucked into a possibly uncovered water outflow system.

Interventions for brood safety

An episode that immediately attracted the attention of the local authorities. After the accident, in fact, a protective grate was installed to keep the other children safe and prevent new risks. The most significant decision, however, was another: the fountain was temporarily stopped, reducing the dangers for the duck family.

Expert recommendations

Environmental associations urge caution. The main advice is clear: do not intervene directly. Moving the animals could compromise the bond between mother and calves, with potentially fatal consequences. Another fundamental point concerns nutrition: feeding ducklings is strongly discouraged. In addition to being harmful to them, it can attract urban predators such as seagulls, crows and rats, increasing the risks for the brood.

A balance to be preserved

A simple but concrete gesture, which demonstrates how even in a large city it is possible to adapt urban spaces to ensure coexistence between man and wildlife. In an urban context often perceived as hostile to nature, it is possible to build a balance. The presence of mother Germana and her little ones thus becomes an invitation to slow down and observe. Because even in the most unexpected places, nature finds space and when it happens, protecting it becomes a shared responsibility.
