The story of the Timmy whale, a young humpback whale measuring around 12 metres, continues to keep Germany and international marine experts in suspense. The male specimen has now been found for weeks in the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea, an environment not suitable for his species, normally accustomed to open oceans. After a first stranding which occurred at the end of March near the island of Poel, near Wismar, the cetacean alternated short releases with new and increasingly difficult episodes of stranding.

Sudden liberations and new challenges
In the last few hours the situation worsened further: Timmy managed to free herself spontaneously, but the relief did not last long. The humpback whale found itself once again trapped in a new shoal, confirming a condition of extreme fragility. According to rescuers, the alternating behavior between escape and immobility indicates an increasing level of physical weakness, probably linked to weeks of fasting and environmental stress.

Complex rescues and rescue strategies
Response teams are attempting increasingly complex operations. Operational hypotheses include the use of floating pontoons, inflatable cushions to lift the animal’s body and containment nets towed by tugboats to accompany the whale towards deeper waters. The goal is to reach the North Sea, a safer environment than the slightly salty and shallow waters of the Baltic.

A creature out of natural habitat
Experts point out that the Baltic Sea represents a hostile environment for a humpback whale. The possible loss of orientation could be linked to echolocation problems or alterations in the Earth’s magnetic field, fundamental tools for cetacean navigation. Other hypothesized factors include illness or prolonged disorientation. Permanence in unsuitable waters, combined with a lack of nourishment, may have compromised the internal organs.
An epilogue still uncertain
Despite everything, some signs leave a glimmer of hope open: the repeated attempts to move suggest that Timmy still retains a minimum amount of vital energy. However, each new stranding drastically reduces the chances of survival. While several activists are pushing to save the humpback whale, others argue that it is better to leave it alone to avoid subjecting it to further stress.
