Before imagining the slow journey, the white road and the evening in the greenery, it is worth looking at the less romantic figure: 52 kilos empty. Because the Alpencamper Eco Slide Out, a small bike caravan designed in Switzerland, was born precisely within this delicate balance. On the one hand there is the desire to cycle further, sleep sheltered, avoid having to pitch a tent in the rain. On the other hand there is a mass to tow, to manage uphill, to carry with you even when the route stops being a postcard and becomes a real road.
However, the project has a clear idea: to transform a trailer into a small habitable space. The structure has a teardrop shape, two wheels, insulated walls and a sliding side system that allows the cabin to expand when you reach your destination. When closed it remains narrow enough to follow the bike. From standstill it gains precious centimeters. The result is a dry place to sleep, read, put down two things and keep out humidity, insects and wind.
The bed opens to the side
The most interesting detail is the side slide-out, a small module that slides outwards and adds about 50 centimeters to the internal width. In this way the resting space reaches approximately 1.40 meters by 1.96 metres, a measurement close to a compact double bed. Two people can sleep in it, even if a minimum amount of adaptation is required: we are still inside a bike micro-caravan, with reduced spaces and geometries designed to save every centimetre.
Inside there is also a surface that can be transformed into a table, useful for eating something, working on the computer or putting away the equipment at the end of the day. Under the bed there is a load compartment of approximately 270 liters, large enough for bags, clothes, tools, food and camping supplies. A space for a dry toilet is also provided, a detail that moves this object beyond the simple idea of a covered trailer.
The equipment remains essential: opening window with blind and mosquito net, battery-powered lighting, stabilizing feet, aluminum and composite material structure. No vanlife luxury, no miniature living room. Rather, a compact solution for those who want to travel by bike with more protection than a tent.
Nice idea, legs permitting
The practical point remains the weight. The declared 52 kilos are empty, therefore without luggage, water, food, equipment and everything you bring on a multi-day trip. With an electric bike the operation becomes more realistic, especially on flat terrain or on well-designed cycle touring routes. On long climbs, challenging dirt roads, busy urban sections or narrow roads, the situation changes a lot.
Price also narrows the field. The model is offered at 8,350 Swiss francs, a figure that makes it an object for true enthusiasts, expert cycle travelers or people already used to investing in outdoor equipment. More than a mass solution, it seems like a very specific answer to a specific need: sleeping in a more protected way during long bike trips, without switching to a van, a car or a camper.
The context, however, helps to understand why projects of this type arise. Cycle tourism has been growing for years, even in Europe, and intercepts a desire for slower travel, more economical in consumption and less dependent on the engine. In France the government talks about millions of cycling trips every year and a rapidly expanding cycle network. In Italy, according to the “Traveling with the bike 2026” report by Isnart and Legambiente, cycle tourism generated approximately 49 million visitors in 2025 and an economic impact estimated at 6.4 billion euros.
A niche that tells a trend
The Alpencamper Eco Slide Out should be read like this: a small niche invention within a broader transformation. More and more people are looking for different ways to travel, with fewer fossil fuels, more autonomy and a less hasty relationship with places. The bike becomes a means of transport, holiday, physical exercise and environmental choice. Then, however, the normal needs remain: sleeping well, shelter, having minimal space, not starting the pitch from scratch every evening.
This bike caravan tries to answer that right there. It offers more comfort than a tent, less space than a micro-camper, zero motor and a level of freedom that all depends on the route, the bike battery, your legs and the desire to get organised. It does not replace traditional camping and does not automatically make cycle touring easy. Adds a possibility.
For many it will remain a curious object to look at online. For some, however, it could become a small room on wheels to attach to the bike and take away. With a fairly concrete certainty: no one can eliminate that climb.
