From 1 January 2026, one of the most discussed measures of recent years could arrive in the Netherlands: a total ban on the purchase and use of fireworks on a private level. The decision was approved by the Senate, which finally gave the go-ahead to the reform after a long political debate. The proposal was carried out mainly by parliamentarians Jesse Klaver and Esther Ouwehand.
However, the stringent timetable could become a problem: for the new law to become effective, in fact, undersecretary Thierry Aartsen will first have to draft a General Administrative Regulation, a necessary step to make it operational.
A reform that has been awaited for years
For some time now, many administrations and emergency services have been calling for decisive action. On New Year’s Eve, the chaos caused by pyrotechnics often transformed the streets into scenes far removed from the celebrations. According to official data, last year 1162 people ended up in the emergency room, many with serious injuries, while 2 citizens lost their lives. Added to these figures are approximately 200 arrests and material damage estimated at 16 million euros.
The Dutch police also strongly support the reform, underlining that the problem is not just noise or pollution, but above all the growing violence with fireworks during New Year’s Eve. According to the police, in recent years a part of the population has adopted behaviors defined as “without limits”, creating situations of great danger for agents, rescuers and citizens.
The Netherlands follows Ireland’s example
If the reform comes into force on schedule, the Netherlands will become the second European country after Ireland to introduce a complete ban on the market and private use of fireworks. A significant change that also responds to fears related to noise pollution, risks to animals and effects on the environment, which have been at the center of protests by associations and citizens for years.
A necessary choice for us and for the Planet
The reform, if definitively approved, would represent a historic step towards safer and less destructive celebrations, marking a turning point that could also lead the way for other European countries. The ban on private fireworks is a conscious choice that looks to the future of the planet. Every year the explosion of firecrackers and rockets releases pollutants into the air which worsen the quality of the environment and contribute to an impact that is often underestimated.
But the ones who would benefit most from this change would be animals, both domestic and wild, who have always experienced New Year’s Eve as a nightmare made of deafening noises and fear. With the new legislation, dogs, cats and urban fauna could finally avoid the stress and trauma caused by bangs, while cities would gain in health and tranquility.
