The Popeye village really exists and I’ll explain how to visit it

Located in the beautiful Anchor Bay, on the north-west coast of the island of Malta, Popeye’s Village is one of the most unique and fascinating tourist attractions in the entire Mediterranean.

Also known as Sweetheaven Village, it was born as a film set for the 1980 film Popeye – Popeye, which starred Robin Williams in the role of the famous comic sailor. Since then, the village has become a magnet for visitors wanting to immerse themselves in the world of one of popular culture’s most beloved characters.

Originally built to replicate the fictional town of Sweet Haven, the village has been preserved and transformed into an open-air museum, keeping the atmosphere and original structure of the film set intact. The site is easily accessible from the nearby village of Mellieha (Mellea) and offers a unique experience not only for film enthusiasts, but also for families looking for a fun-filled day out.

Popeye’s Village is open to the public seven days a week, from 9:30 in the morning until 5:30 in the afternoon, with a greater influx of visitors on weekends. This little corner of fantasy is one of the most visited places on the island, attracting thousands of tourists every year who wish to relive the adventures of Popeye and the other characters who populate this imaginary world.

After filming concluded, the village was enriched with a series of attractions designed to entertain visitors of all ages, but with particular attention to families with children. Popular attractions include interactive playhouses and museums, as well as live shows involving entertainers dressed as Popeye, Olivia, Bluto and Poldo characters. The little ones have the opportunity to have their photo taken with their heroes and take part in numerous fun activities which make the village one of the most enchanting places in Europe for a family outing.

In the center of the village there is a screening room where visitors can watch films that tell the story of the film’s production and the history of the village. The documentaries offer an interesting insight into how the set was made and how it was later transformed into a tourist attraction. During the year, particularly during holiday periods, the village hosts group lunches and dinners, making the experience even more engaging for those who want to spend time in company.

When weather conditions permit, it is possible to take a boat tour in Anchor Bay, which offers a unique perspective on the village and the spectacular Maltese coast. The sea excursion is one of the activities most appreciated by visitors, as it allows you to admire the village from a privileged point of view, surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Popeye’s Village also offers a series of entertainment services ranging from puppet shows to live performances of the characters from the series. These events, designed mainly for the little ones, are an opportunity for families to have fun together, creating unforgettable memories.

Despite the particularity of the place, there is no shortage of criticism: some tourists believe that the cost of the entrance ticket is quite high, considering that the price of 15 euros may seem excessive for some. Despite this, the park offers various leisure opportunities that justify, at least in part, the cost of the ticket. The price includes services such as free postcards, access to the cinema, a mini golf course, sunbeds, umbrellas and showers. Additionally, visitors can enjoy water toys, diving boards and a pool called the Splash Pool. For those who want to relax while the children play, there are refreshment points where it is possible to enjoy an ice cream or a snack, enjoying a day of leisure in a truly unique context.
