On 1 September 2025 it will mark the early start of the hunting season in many Italian regions, despite the official date is set for the third Sunday of September, namely 21 and in the countryside since the first days of the month.
This practice, widespread for years now, allows you to start hunting before the official national date, thus actually giving in to the requests of hunting enthusiasts. This is not an obligation, but a possibility that the Regions offer in response to pressure from the hunting sector.
There is a risk that the hunting period is even more extensive
Parallel the Parliament is discussing the bill 1552, which could profoundly change the rules of hunting in Italy. Among the most controversial proposals are: the hunt for migratory birds on mountain passes, the reopening of the capture systems of the birds of recall, the possibility of hunting even in spring and state forests, and the reduction of protected areas. In short, a real massacre of innocent animals.
These changes, if approved, would significantly extend the hunting period, up to eliminating the maximum limit currently set at the first decade of February. This would lead not only a significant impact on wildlife, but also an increase in citizens’ safety risks, considering the greater exposure to firearms in open spaces.
The collection of signatures against hunting
To stop the anticipated start of the season and the potential legislative changes to the sector, LAV is promoting a signature collection initiative to propose popular initiative laws aimed at limiting or abolishing hunting, in contrast with the decisions of the political majority.
According to the Association, the majority of Italian citizens do not approve the hunt with 76% who sees it as a violent and dangerous activity for animals and people. Yet, despite being an increasingly contested activity, it continues to benefit from concessions that put the protection of nature and wild animals in the background.
