Sometimes you don’t need to cross the ocean to experience emotions that recall the landscapes of North America, because they are just around the corner! Right in Lombardy there is a place where nature seems to have recreated the atmosphere of Canadian forests: it is called Preda Rossa and is located in Val Masino, province of Sondrio, about two hours’ drive from Milan.
A corner of alpine wilderness
Preda Rossa hides in the upper part of Val Masino, a side valley of Valtellina which extends to the foot of the Disgrazia massif. The landscape here changes radically compared to the typical slopes of the Italian Alps, and we will find forests of spruce, larch and Scots pines, which will recreate a frame that recalls the boreal lands. How can we not mention the Masino stream, which flows between smooth boulders and pools of crystalline water, adding an element of magic to every step.
Access to the town is via a dirt road that starts from San Martino, a hamlet of Valmasino. The route winds through dense woods and crosses some wooden bridges which increase the feeling of being in a wild and remote area. During the summer season the road is passable by car, while at other times of the year it may be necessary to walk for a while.
The explosion of autumn colors
Autumn transforms Preda Rossa into a natural spectacle of rare beauty. The larches take on golden hues that contrast with the dark green of the fir trees. The ferns that cover the undergrowth are tinged with red and orange, creating a chromatic mosaic that changes at every bend of the path. The sunlight filters through the branches and illuminates the morning fog, creating atmospheres that seem to come straight out of a postcard from Quebec or Vermont.

The best time to visit this area is from the end of September to mid-October, when the foliage reaches its peak. The cool autumn temperatures make walking pleasant and the clean mountain air amplifies the clarity of the colours.
What to do in Preda Rossa
The place offers various possibilities for those who love the mountains. The path that goes up the valley is also suitable for families with children, as long as they are used to walking on natural terrain. The route does not present particular technical difficulties and allows you to completely immerse yourself in the wooded environment.
Photography enthusiasts will find extraordinary subjects here: the play of light among the trees, the reflecting pools of the stream, the details of the undergrowth and the views of the surrounding peaks offer endless creative opportunities. Those seeking peace can simply sit near the stream and enjoy the sound of the water and the rustle of the wind among the branches.
For more experienced hikers, Preda Rossa also represents the starting point for climbs towards the high altitude refuges and the peaks of the Disgrazia group. Val di Mello, famous for its granite walls, is nearby and can be reached easily.
Practical information
Reaching Preda Rossa requires a minimum of organization. From Milan you travel along the Valtellina up to Morbegno, from where you go up towards Civo and then towards Val Masino. Once you arrive in San Martino, follow the signs for Val di Mello and then for Preda Rossa.
It is advisable to find out about the conditions of the dirt road before setting off, especially after periods of bad weather. The area has no services, so it is best to bring water and food with you. Trekking shoes are essential, as is layered clothing to face the temperature changes typical of the mountains.
Respect for the environment is fundamental: the area is part of an area of ​​particular naturalistic value and deserves to be preserved. Collecting your waste and respecting the local flora and fauna are essential behaviors to keep this little Alpine jewel intact.
