An excursion on the Sardinian coast risked turning into a tragedy due to the superficiality with which it was approached. On the afternoon of July 30, two young tourists found themselves in very serious difficulty while returning from the renowned beach of Cala Mariolu, known in local tradition as Ispuligedenìe.
The two boys were struck by a sudden illness, caused by the combination of the summer heat, extreme tiredness and the complete exhaustion of their water supplies. What made the undertaking even more risky was the choice of clothing: the travelers were facing an arduous route wearing plastic slippers instead of the much safer and more suitable trekking shoes.
The complex helicopter rescue machine
The severity of the clinical picture required a timely rescue operation. To recover the two unfortunates, it was essential to send the AREUS helicopter to the site, supported by land by the specialized teams of the Alpine and Speleological Rescue (CNSAS). The technicians worked along the steep paths of the Supramonte, saving the young people before dehydration and ground conditions caused worse consequences. The event once again highlighted the dangers of a fascinating but harsh territory, characterized by steep differences in altitude, long distances and sections exposed to the high temperatures of the hot season.
The institutional warning on prevention
However, what was particularly important was the way in which the young people faced the altitude difficulties: in slippers and with little water to drink. Precisely on this, Salvatore Corrias, regional councilor of the PD and former mayor of Baunei, with a profound knowledge of that coastal stretch, expressed himself firmly. The political exponent wanted to underline the absolute need for individual responsibility in approaching the mountains. Salvatore Corrias expressed his concerns by stating:

The former mayor reiterated how essential it is to study the nature of the route before venturing out, concluding his thoughts:

Correct planning will allow you to reduce the risks to your safety and avoid having to resort to emergency interventions that involve highly specialized vehicles and personnel, such as the air ambulance and the CNSAS teams, fundamental resources for dealing with truly unpredictable situations..
An invitation to all visitors to respect the municipal ordinances and avoid unnecessary dangers which do nothing but hinder the rescue of those who are really in difficulty.
