They formed a human chain to save a dog and a young man who fell into a river: now their gesture of solidarity has become a statue

Ten years ago it was a video shared millions of times. Today it has become a permanent monument celebrating the strength of solidarity. In Almaty, Kazakhstan, a public sculpture was inaugurated on March 18 that recreates a scene that has remained imprinted in collective memory: the rescue of a dog that fell into the Sayran basin and of the young man who had tried to help him.

In 2016 the animal was trapped along the smooth walls of the basin. A boy decided to go down to retrieve it, but once he reached the dog he couldn’t get back up. In just a few moments the situation transformed from a spontaneous gesture to a sudden emergency. That’s when some passersby joined in, grabbing each other’s arms and forming a human chain to pull both of them out.

A collective gesture that went around the world

The scene was filmed and posted online, quickly going viral. The video reached millions of views and was relaunched by international media, transforming that moment into a symbol of spontaneous cooperation. Not a single hero, but ordinary people who, without knowing each other, decided to act together.

This is precisely what made the rescue so powerful: immediate solidarity. No organization, no planning. Just a series of decisions made in a matter of seconds. Those who were present joined the others, creating an improvised human ladder that allowed the dog and the boy to be saved.

The sculpture that immortalises the human chain

Now a new art installation reproduces that very moment. The figures are depicted holding each other’s arms, forming a compact chain that symbolizes mutual support and collective action. The work was placed above the bed of the Big Almaty River, near the Sayran Reservoir, the actual site of the rescue.

According to the city administration, the project was privately financed and approved by the Department of Public Space Development. The goal is to transform a viral episode into a permanent urban message.

A symbol of unity and mutual help

The composition does not celebrate a single protagonist but a shared gesture. The united figures represent mutual support, collaboration and collective courage. The idea behind the work is simple: when people help each other, even difficult situations can be overcome.

What began as a casual scene today becomes a public symbol. The sculpture reminds us that, in that moment, no one held back. And that, sometimes, it is enough to join arms to transform fear into a ladder and solidarity into a gesture destined to last over time.
