The story of Wade Milyard, a former police officer from Frederick (Maryland), was born from years of direct experience with situations of strong social hardship. After retirement, he decided to transform what he had seen in service into a concrete project: a mobile laundry dedicated to homeless people, with the aim of giving them back an often overlooked but fundamental element, personal dignity.

The episode that changes everything
The turning point comes during an intervention in a homeless encampment. Milyard says he discovered that some people were forced to wash their clothes in a stream, a few meters from the tents. That scene becomes the starting point of a broader reflection: how can we guarantee hygiene and respect for those who live without access to essential services? The Fresh Step Laundry project was born from this question, a non-profit initiative destined to change its future.
The Lucy bus and the laundry on wheels
The heart of the project is an old police bus transformed and renamed Lucy. Three washing machines and three dryers have been installed inside, as well as everything necessary to offer a complete service. The mobile laundry regularly travels the streets of Frederick, stopping at reception centers and community facilities, becoming a stable point of reference for those in need.

A growing help network
The project has expanded thanks to the collaboration with the Living Water Shower Ministry, which combines the laundry with a mobile shower service and distribution of hygiene products. The objective is to guarantee minimum conditions of daily dignity. According to operators, even a simple gesture like having clean clothes can make a difference in a person’s life, especially in situations of extreme fragility.
A project that looks to the future
Today Fresh Step Laundry has become an increasingly recognized model of social intervention. Milyard is considering adding a second vehicle to reach more people, including minors and families in housing difficulty. Its mission remains the same: to use a simple and concrete gesture like washing to give people a sense of normality and respect.
