Iceland is one of the most fascinating and wild places on the planet, but also among the most dangerous. Among the landscapes that seem to have come out of a fantasy film, the Reynispjara beach – in the southern area of the island, near the city of Vík í Mýrdal – is one of the most visited destinations by tourists. But it is also sadly known to be the most dangerous beach in the world, and it is not an exaggeration.
What makes Reynispjara so lethal?
It is not only the beauty that makes Reynispjara unique, but also its extreme nature. This long volcanic black sandy beach, surrounded by basalt columns and imposing pharaglons, is a dramatic place. But what many tourists ignore – or underestimate – is the real invisible enemy: the sneaker waves, or anomalous waves.
Waves sneaker: what they are and why they are so dangerous

Sneakers waves are anomalous coastal waves that may seem harmless at the beginning. With the naked eye, the sea may appear calm or with small-media height waves. But just lower the guard for a few seconds, and here a huge wave rises suddenly, overwhelming those near the shore.
These waves are not predictable. They can even arrive after minutes of flat calm, sweep away everything within their range of action and drag people into the open sea, where the currents are very strong.
Why do they happen right here?
The Oceanic backdrop of Reynispjara quickly lowers, creating the perfect conditions for high and violent waves. The currents are powerful and unpredictable. When a wave sneaker hits, he creates an aspiring effect, taking away the sand under his feet and dragging anyone on his trajectory at sea, often without the possibility of going back.
Once in the water, between the hypothermia caused by the icy temperatures and the deadly currents, the probability of salvation are very low. And there is no one to help you: there are no lifeguards and the weather conditions can worsen in a few minutes.
Another tragedy: the case of the German family

A few days ago, Reynispjara returned to the center of media attention for a tragedy that hit a German family. Attached by the show of the black beach, like thousands of tourists every year, they approached too much to the shore ignoring the danger signs. A wave sneaker overwhelmed them. A little girl was taken away from the sea, the father and the other girl recovered by miracle. A fatal error, a distraction cost a lifetime.
Security? Only ignored notices

The alert system in Reynispjara is based on lights:
But the signals are constantly ignored, perhaps because there are no active checks or perhaps because the risk is underestimated. Icelandic social networks are in turmoil, and many ask for the closure of the beach or limited access only to guides and expert people. Reynispjara’s beauty fascinates fascinates, but nature does not forgive here.
Should the authorities intervene?
The question is thorny: Reynispjara is one of the most iconic attractions of Icelandic tourism. But continuing to leave it accessible without real protections means putting human lives at risk.
The signs are not enough, especially for tourists who come from very different contexts and are not used to confronting such an extreme and cruel nature.
Iceland is spectacular, but it is not a playground
Reynispjara’s beach is not a place to instagrammare lightly. It is a wild environment, beautiful as fatal. Sneakers waves are not legends, they are real waves that have already killed.
Those who visit Iceland must understand that not everything is accessible as in the tourist places of southern Europe. Here nature commands, and inattention is paid dear. Perhaps the time has come to take serious measures.
