Today the meteorological winter begins: bad weather in sight for the Immaculate Conception

Today, Monday 1 December 2025, marks the official start of the meteorological winter, anticipating the astronomical one by about twenty days. This year the Atlantic currents will not bring intense cold to Italy, with temperatures that will remain in line with the seasonal average or slightly higher. Precipitation will mainly affect the Tyrrhenian regions, from Liguria to Campania, and Sardinia, with locally moderate showers. In the North and other areas of Central-Southern Italy, however, there will be scattered clouds without significant phenomena.

The forecast for the first days of December

Between Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd December, weather models predict the formation of a Mediterranean minimum which will bring local rainfall to the North and Western regions. Sardinia and the Tyrrhenian areas will continue to be affected by showers, while snowfall at medium altitudes is expected in the Alps.

Temperatures will remain stationary, with winds coming from the south or east and rough seas. The situation will remain uncertain between Thursday 4 and Saturday 6 December, due to the possible formation of two lows, one between the Balearics and Sardinia and another over North Africa, capable of causing widespread rainfall and locally more intense winds in the western and southern regions.

Long weekend of the Immaculate Conception: bad weather on the way

According to the latest updates from 3BMeteo and iLMeteo, between 7 and 8 December a combination of an Atlantic cyclone and cold northern currents could generate a phase of intense bad weather. The Alps, in particular Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Lombardy, will be affected by snowfall even at relatively low altitudes. In the Center and South, however, thundershowers and strong winds are expected in the Tyrrhenian regions, with possible significant accumulations of rain and snow.

The disturbance comes from Northern Europe and will be driven by polar currents. It will initially hit the British Isles and France, then slide towards the Mediterranean and deepen into the Tyrrhenian Sea. December therefore promises to be a dynamic month, characterized by atmospheric instability, widespread rain, thundershowers and snowfall at variable altitudes, confirming the full entry of winter in the Mediterranean.
