There is no peace for the wolves in South Tyrol. After already last year was decided for the demolition of two specimens and then, thanks to the mobilization of activists for animal rights, the South Tyrolean governor had turned over, this year the story repeats himself.
In fact, in Val Venosta, the demolition of two wolves has been authorized. This was communicated by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, who confirms how the task was entrusted to the provincial forestry body.
In the period between May and July 2025 – the Provincial Authorities write – In the upper Val Venosta, 31 attacks on Pascolo animals occurred, confirmed and documented by the forest authority as wolves attacks. In the same area, 42 attacks had already been recorded in the previous seasonal season. The affected huts have been declared areas for the protection of pastures. However, the owners adopted cattle protection measures, which however have not been able to prevent harmful events.
In these hours, therefore, the president of the Province Arno Kompatscher has signed the authorization for the withdrawal of two wolves in the Upper Val Venosta.
Both the provincial faunal observatory – the authorities continue – and the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) have expressed a favorable opinion on the withdrawal of two wolves pursuant to the provincial law 10/2023. The withdrawal authorization is valid for 60 days. The Provincial Forestry Corps is in charge of the withdrawal of the two wolves.
Animalists are not there
Punctual as a macabre ritual, this summer also arrives the death sentence of two wolves at random following the predations of animals in evidently not adequate farms – declares Massimo Vitturi, Lav manager, wild animals – Kompatscher thus continues to support the most retrum part of breeders who would like to eliminate every wolf from the territory in order to continue to exploit and send the animals they bred without interference.
Among other things, the same authorization signed by the President of the Province of Bolzano highlights that the means of prevention, the only ones who can prevent the predations, have been used inadequately.
It is not tolerable to kill two random wolves only to allow breeders to ignore the prevention tools, the only ones capable of fully guaranteeing the protection of biodiversity and animals pursuant to art. 9 of the Constitution, especially now that the European wolf downgrade has not yet been received in Italy – concludes Lav – for this reason we are preparing an appeal that we will present to the Bolzano Tar in the next few hours, we want to stop the bloody purpose of Kompatscher and save the wolves that have acted for the sole purpose of surviving.
For its part, the National Animal Protection Authority also announces that it has activated its lawyers and to appeal to the TAR against the authorization signed by Kompatscher and reiterates that the wolf in Italy has not lost the status of particularly protected species, and even in the case of a future regulatory decline, this would not automatically authorize the demolition that remains an exceptional derogation.
We are in front of yet another shortcut to satisfy a part of the rural world hostile to wildlife, completely ignoring the complexity of the problem. An illegitimate, ineffective and dangerous measure.
