What was supposed to be an evening of entertainment at a Red Sea resort turned into a fatal episode. In Hurghada, Egypt, a 57-year-old German tourist died after being bitten by a snake during a show organized inside the hotel. This all took place despite the fact that Egypt has banned animal shows in hotels and tourist villages. A provision that has already come into force, but which in this case – and we fear in many others – has been ignored. The man was on holiday with his family and was taking part in an entertainment show with a snake charmer, an activity included in the hotel’s evening programme. The performance involved direct interaction with reptiles, presumably cobras, shown to the public and brought closer to the spectators.
The moment of the bite during the performance
According to the reconstructions of the authorities, during the show the performer would have involved some guests, wrapping snakes around the necks of the participants. In a subsequent step, one of the animals would be slipped inside the tourist’s trousers. It was precisely at that moment that the bite on the leg occurred. The man quickly began to show signs consistent with snake venom poisoning, with a sudden clinical deterioration.
The rescue attempt and death
The situation worsened within minutes. Emergency services arrived on site and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation operations, before urgent transfer to hospital. Despite medical interventions, the tourist died shortly after hospitalization. The authorities speak of a clinical picture compatible with serious poisoning, but the exact dynamics still remain under investigation.
International investigations and assessments
The case is now at the center of a joint investigation between Germany and Egypt, also launched by the German authorities since the victim was a Bavarian citizen. The investigators are collecting testimonies and verifying the safety procedures adopted during the show. There are currently no formal charges against the snake charmer or the resort staff. The police underlined that the investigation is still open and that there is a lack of definitive elements regarding direct responsibility for the incident.
The crux of toxicological tests
The central element of the investigations remains the toxicological tests, which are still ongoing. These will be the ones to precisely establish the nature of the poison and its actual role in the death. In the meantime, the affair reignites attention on the safety of shows with exotic animals in tourist contexts, where the line between entertainment and risk can prove extremely thin.
