“Toxic” or “poisonous” chocolate? The failure of journalism in the Colussi case: “it was a self-reporting as a precaution”

A recent recall of dark chocolate bars has caused excessive alarmism on the web and the company that produced them has preferred to intervene to clarify the situation

A recent precautionary recall of some of the brand’s black cherry and almond flavored dark chocolate barsDriveway” has raised excessive alarmism on the web, so much so that the company La Suissa Srl, producer of the tablets on behalf of Colussi Spawanted to clarify the situation, calling for calm.

What happened?

Let’s recap the situation for a moment: in recent days the Ministry of Health had reported the risk of allergens not declared on the label, in particular milkin a batch of black cherry and almond flavored dark chocolate bars from the “Vialetto” brand.

We also talked about it in the following article: Dark chocolate recalled due to undeclared allergens, the brand and batches affected

There is nothing strange in reporting the recall, the problem is that some sites have reported the matter in an excessively alarmist manner, giving a distorted interpretation of a precautionary recall which, instead, was managed promptly and with maximum transparency. from the company.

Suissa Srl made it known that it was a graphic error in the packagingwhich led to self-reporting as a precaution, to avoid any risk for consumers allergic to milk.

The tablets involved, sold in 100 gram packs, were produced in the Arquata Scrivia plant and belonged to batch L38D4 with a minimum shelf life set for 19 December 2025.

While the error affected only a limited number of packages (a few hundred)the company has already withdrawn it from the market, blocking sales and activating the recall procedure. More than half of the affected packages have already been returned.

The company also underlined that the reporting to the competent authorities was made promptly as soon as the anomaly was detected.

In an official note which we report below, Vialetto reassured consumers that the product does not represent a concrete danger, inviting those who purchased the product to return it to the point of sale for a refund. A new batch with the correct graphics will be released starting December 2nd.

Company details

This is the statement the company sent us:

Regarding the articles that are coming out in these hours regarding the withdrawal from the market of a Vialetto chocolate bar, we would like to clarify what happened with the primary objective of reassuring our customers and also curbing excessive alarmism”, as the company specifies. “The first thing that needs to be highlighted is that it was a self-report as a precaution: we withdrew the batch of the Vialetto brand Osvaldo Fondente Amarena e Mandorle bar produced in the La Suissa factory in Arquata Scrivia because we noticed an error in the graphics of the packaging, in particular in the wording of possible traces of allergens, which was missing that of milk. It was therefore a precautionary recall as it did not highlight the presence of milk. As soon as we discovered this anomaly, as required by current regulations, we ourselves reported it to the competent authorities. At the same time, we blocked sales, started the recall procedure from points of sale and activated the recall procedure for consumers. The Vialetto.it website has been updated with the information and product management instructions already in the consumer’s possession. From Monday 2 December we will start delivering the new product to the stores with the correct graphics. However, it was just a few hundred packages, of which over half have already been collected and returned to our hands.

No to unjustified alarmism

It is important to remember that, although alarmist headlines can generate clicks, consumers (and the media) should evaluate the nature of recalls with caution.

In this case, it is a situation managed responsibly by the company, which acted promptly to correct the error and prevent potential health risks, particularly for people allergic to milk. For all other consumers, the recalled tablets were still safe.

. It is always important to check news sources before drawing conclusions.
