From samurai to anime heroes

The story will start from the historical roots of the country, crossing the legendary figure of the samurai, symbol of honor, discipline and absolute loyalty. A world made of very rigid codes, fights and rituals which still today continues to exert an enormous fascination on the Western imagination. But Japan told by Ulysses it will not stop at tradition. Alberto Angela will also enter the contemporary universe of manga and anime, which have now become global cultural phenomena. Entire generations have grown up with characters and stories born in Japan, transforming the country into a global reference point for pop culture.

Futuristic technology and extremely delicate nature

One of the most surprising aspects of the episode will be the continuous contrast between opposing worlds. On the one hand, cutting-edge technology, hyper-connected metropolises, very high-speed trains and innovation that seems to come directly from the future. On the other, the almost poetic delicacy of cherry blossoms, symbol of the fragility of life and of the beauty destined to fade. The trip will also touch on the famous Japanese cuisine, now beloved throughout the world. Not just sushi and ramen, but a true food philosophy made of balance, aesthetics and respect for the ingredients.

The dark sides of Japanese history

The episode will not even avoid the most dramatic chapters of Japanese history. Alberto Angela will in fact address the theme of suicide bombers, seppuku and Japan’s relationship with sacrifice, honor and death. There will also be space for another reality that has always accompanied the life of the country: natural disasters. Earthquakes, tsunamis and extreme phenomena have shaped cities, architecture and the mentality of a population continually forced to live with risk.

The other two episodes: Lucrezia Borgia and Hidden Paris

The new season of Ulysses – The pleasure of discovery thus continues to confirm its ability to transform disclosure into a great television show. After the episode To the tune of New Yorkwhich transformed Manhattan into a gigantic open-air soundtrack, the program will continue on Monday 18 May with an episode dedicated to Lucrezia Borgia, one of the most controversial figures of the Italian Renaissance. The objective will be to go beyond clichés and restore the portrait of a complex, intelligent and politically influential woman, far from the caricatured image handed down over the centuries. The season will then end with Hidden Parisa surprising itinerary inside the most secret French capital. Not the postcard city, but the underground and silent one made up of hidden passages, catacombs and places little known to mass tourism.
