Vandals smear the stele of peace that stands on Etna (as a symbol of union between peoples)

Not even a year has passed since its inauguration and has already been vandalized: the Stele of Peace, which stands among the Birch of Etna, was covered with huge writings made with black spray. To report the desolating episode, the Rotary Club Passport Mediterranee District 2110, which had strongly wanted that sculpture – made of lava stone – facing the Mediterranean to symbolize the union between peoples.

Just last July, a march for peace had been organized to the stele, created by the skilled hands of the artist Nicola Dell’Erba. But last Saturday, during an excursion, the members of another club found the serious vandalism, reporting it.

“This monument wants to symbolize a contact between the extreme coasts of Europe and the coasts of the Africa continent. We are for positive peace, the one that makes well -being and beauty, the one that makes the peoples meet and determines social prosperita, the one that resolves conflicts with diplomacy and common sense” comments Giuseppe Rossi, president of the Rotary Club Passport Mediterranee District 2110, making the club be known to the competent authorities.

It is not yet clear how and when the stele of peace will be cleaned, but its promoters do not throw the sponge.

“We will still commit ourselves to restoring our monument, committing our time and our economic resources – conclude the members of the club – hoping that the photos that you will have certainly taken and you will be spreading in your channels, may have satisfied your energy that otherwise you may be able to channel ethically, morally and socially more profitable”.
