Italy is preparing to leave behind days of unseasonal heat, with temperatures reaching 26°C well above the averages for the period. Until Saturday 11 April, the high pressure of North African origin will maintain generally stable conditions, but the first cracks in the anticyclonic framework are already arriving.
On Saturday the picture will still be reassuring: clear or slightly cloudy skies in the North, good weather spread across the Center and Sardinia with some thickening on the Adriatic slopes, stable air in the South and in Sicily with mostly clear skies except for some cloud cover on the Apennine and Apulian mountains. The winds will blow moderately from the eastern quadrants on the Adriatic and southern coasts of Sardinia, while the seas will be rough on Sardinia and Canale, with wave motion increasing from the western sectors during the day.
However, between Friday and Saturday the most visible change will be in the color of the sky: the rise of Saharan dust will make the atmosphere increasingly less clear, with milky skies especially in the Centre-South. The suspended particles – in reality fine silt, not real sand – anticipate a worsening that will begin to appear as early as Sunday 12th, when in the afternoon irregular cloud cover will extend across the entire territory with scattered light rains, more intense in Piedmont and Trentino-Alto Adige.
From April 13th thunderstorms: the most affected areas
The real change will arrive on Monday 13 April with a double front: from the South a mild and humid air mass full of dust, from the Atlantic unstable air which will reach the country starting from the north-western sectors. Rain and showers will first hit Piedmont, Lombardy and Sardinia and then progressively spread to the rest of Italy. On Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th April the sky will be irregularly cloudy across the entire territory, with heavier rainfall and at times thunderstorms in the central regions and Sardinia. Only on the second day can a gradual improvement be seen, which however will not yet rule out scattered rainfall across the entire country.
The drop in temperatures will be clear: from the anomalous values of these days they will rapidly drop towards highs of 17-18°C, bringing the country back to typically spring conditions, with sunshine alternating with showers, coolness and variability.
