In some experimental farms, especially in Russia and Türkiye, a solution that is as futuristic as it is controversial has been introduced: the use of virtual reality viewers on cows. The objective is simple in theory, but complex in impact: to simulate green and sunny meadows while the animals remain closed on farms, especially during the winter months.
The idea comes from a principle known to farmers: a less stressed cow tends to produce more milk and maintain more stable behavior. In this case, however, “wellbeing” is artificially recreated through digital environments designed to deceive the animal’s visual perception.
The case of the Turkish farmer and the Russian experiment
Among the most cited examples is that of a farmer from Aksaray, Turkey, who applied visors to two cattle during periods of intense cold. According to his statements, milk production would have increased from around 22 to 27 liters per day, accompanied by calmer and less agitated animals.
Another experiment, in Russia, would have tested devices adapted to the bovine visual field, developed with the collaboration of veterinarians. The images shown would be bright natural environments, designed to reduce the perception of isolation typical of intensive farming.

Bovine metaverse: between technology and animal perception
Some observers have already dubbed these tests as a sort of “cow metaverse”, a definition that immediately gives the idea of the conceptual leap underway. It is not just technology applied to agriculture, but an attempt to change the perception of animals’ reality.
Supporters talk about innovation useful for animal welfare and productivity. The main effect would be a reduction in stress and an increase in milk production. In some cases we talk about calmer and less reactive animals. However, one key point remains unclear: There is no definitive evidence about how cows actually interpret these images or whether they can distinguish between real and artificial stimuli.
A necessary reflection: innovation or dystopia?
Furthermore, the idea of “deceiving” an animal’s perception raises ethical questions about where the line between care and manipulation is being pushed. Behind the apparent technological curiosity, a deeper and more disturbing scenario opens up. The idea of replacing a real pasture with a virtual one is not just about agricultural productivity, but about the relationship between humans, animals and technology.
The path taken risks turning into a form of digital imprisonment disguised as comfort. The image of cows with VR viewers thus becomes a symbol of an era in which technology no longer limits itself to assisting nature, but tries to rewrite it. The result is a mixture of fascination and anxiety: a progress that, instead of bringing us closer to nature, seems to distance us even further.
