Wolves injured and killed by rifle shots in the Arezzo area, animal rights activists denounce: “gratuitous and irresponsible violence”

A trail of brutal poaching is bloodying the rural and inhabited areas of the province of Arezzo, where several wolf specimens have recently been victims of very serious injuries and atrocious deaths caused by gunshots. Lifting the veil on this disturbing escalation is Enpa, which has documented episodes of unprecedented cruelty that occurred outside of hunting periods and within anthropized areas.

The first case dates back to August in the Molinelli area, where a specimen was recovered after a citizen reported that he had mistaken the predator for a wounded dog. The animal had a devastating bullet hole in its forehead and died after suffering 15 days of agony due to its injuries.

The x-rays reveal the systematic shooting of the animals

The investigations conducted on the subsequent findings confirmed a systematic and illegal armed persecution against the protected species. In the countryside of Pieve al Toppo, the carcass of a wolf found dead following the bites of a wild boar was subjected to x-ray, revealing the presence in the body of numerous hunting pellets attributable to a previous ambush.

An identical dynamic emerged from the clinical examination carried out on a wolf hit along Regional Road 71, whose tortured body bore clear signs of previous shootings. Faced with this alarming picture, the animal rights association has arranged for the immediate sending of the documents to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, thanking the work of the Regional Task Force and the Forestry Carabinieri for the constant monitoring to protect biodiversity.

The appeal of the associations and the difficult coexistence

The repetition of similar illegal acts puts the spotlight back on the delicate balance of coexistence between human activities and the return of large predators to the national territory. Although the European and national regulatory context guarantees rigorous protection for the species, the use of private violence and poaching continues to represent an open wound for the ecosystem.

In firmly condemning the incident through an official note, Enpa wanted to launch a heartfelt appeal to local citizens:

As Enpa we want to firmly reiterate our condemnation of these acts of gratuitous and irresponsible violence. The protection of animals and respectful coexistence with nature are essential values that we must all commit to, because every creature deserves to live without fear and pain. We therefore invite the entire local community to collaborate with respect and awareness, promptly reporting any situation of danger or mistreatment and promoting peaceful coexistence with wildlife. Only through mutual respect and love for nature will we be able to guarantee a sustainable future for these extraordinary inhabitants of our territory.
