Some cases of werewolf syndrome have been detected in infants whose parents used topical minoxidil. It is suspected that the drug may have been accidentally transferred through skin contact or via the pacifier
THE’androgenetic alopeciaor baldness, is a common condition affecting both men and women, characterized by progressive hair loss on the scalp. Among the most popular treatments to combat this disorder are topical medications, such as minoxidilwhich can be purchased without a prescription.
Although generally considered safe, recent research has highlighted possible unexpected side effectsespecially when the drug is used by caregivers newborns. The Pharmacovigilance Center of Navarra has in fact identified a worrying case of hypertrichosis, a condition also known as “werewolf syndrome”, which manifests itself with a excessive hair growth all over the body.
This phenomenon, although unusual, has been observed in infants whose parents used topical minoxidil. It is suspected that the drug may have been accidentally transferred to childrenfor example, through contact with the skin or through the pacifier, which may have absorbed the product.
Newborns absorb topical medications more easily
The initial case was that of a breastfed baby who developed a abnormal hair growth on the back, legs and thighs. After stopping contact with minoxidil, the symptoms completely subsided. Further investigations led to the discovery of six similar casessuggesting that accidental exposure to the drug could be a significant risk factor for the onset of hypertrichosis in newborns.
The problem is particularly serious, since newborns, with thinner and more permeable skin, they absorb topical medications more easily compared to adults, increasing the risk of systemic effects. Although hypertrichosis does not pose an immediate health threat, it may require a series of tests to rule out other conditions and cause anxiety in the families involved.
In light of these findings, health authorities have recommended the inclusion of clearer warnings in package leaflets of drugs containing minoxidil, indicating the risks of accidental exposure in children. It is critical that families are aware of the risks associated with the use of these medications, especially when there are newborns in the home.
