A 13-year-old boy made an extraordinary gesture to save his mother and two younger siblings off the west coast of Australia, in Geographe Bay, near Quindalup. During a SUP and kayak trip, gusts of wind pushed the mother and her children aged 12 and 8 away from the shore, leaving the young man alone and determined to ask for help.
The boy initially tried to return to shore with his kayak, but when the boat began to take on water he continued swimming for 4 kilometres, facing waves and currents, without giving up. The first two hours were spent wearing a life jacket, then the young man decided to take it off to move more easily, completing the journey to shore after another two hours of intense effort.

The alarm and the search
Having reached the shore as the light fell, the boy immediately ran to the first available telephone and raised the alarm asking for help to save his family. The precision in describing the colors of the kayaks and paddle boards allowed the rescuers to quickly pinpoint their exact location.
The search operations involved WA Water Police, volunteers from the Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group and the Western Australian Emergency Helicopter. Thanks to this coordination and the young man’s determination, the mother and two brothers were found clinging to a SUP, now about 14 kilometers from the coast, and rescued without serious injuries.
Congratulations to the boy
Commander Paul Bresland called the boy’s feat superhuman, underlining his strength, courage and determination. The mother also played a fundamental role, keeping the family together during the hours on the open sea, demonstrating resistance despite the fatigue. The episode impressed rescuers and local authorities, with Inspector James Bradley praising the courage and clarity of the 13-year-old, capable of transforming a potentially dramatic situation into a successful rescue.
