The enchanting plitvice lakes

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is included in the broader context of the Dinarica karst area, characterized by karst forms and rare phenomena of surface water courses and a strong link between the surface and the subsoil through the numerous cracks. Hence the extraordinary nature of the place.

An important role in this linked structure of lakes is played by the tank that provides and distributes the water. The tank is very permeable, characterized by numerous karst forms of the subsoil (caves and pits) and the surface (doline and fields). However, it is devoid of superficial courses. The limestone leaders rise in these areas, where the highest peak is also located (Seliški 1279 m). Their peculiarity lies in the fact that after walking in the subsoil for a stretch, the water meets a obstacle, a waterproof rock area, which forces her to emerge on the surface forming the numerous streams, which in turn feed the lakes.

The rich biodiversity of the park

The Plitvice Lakes Park is famous for the 22 species protected by the law on the protection of the nature of the Republic of Croatia. Among them the most important is the Scarpetta di Venere (CYPRIPEDIUM CALCEOLUS), the most beautiful orchid in Europe. Another peculiarity consists of carnivorous plants, including the Rosolida (Drosera Rotundifolia) and the minor bladder grass (Utricularia minor), a very rare water carnivorous plant.

In this green paradise 157 species of birds live, 50 species of mammals including ghiri, toporagni, common country mice, curls, martore, faine, wild boars, 20 types of bats, 321 species of butterflies (76 daytime and 245 night) and other animals, including the brown bear, the wolf, the lynx and the roe deer. However, its symbol is the bear, even if the richness of the fauna is very vast.
