The Caldane, located in the locality of Gracciano, near Colle Val d’Elsa (province of Siena), are a hidden pearl of the Tuscan countryside. This small corner of Paradise offers a unique experience: immersing yourself in its thermal waters means taking a dip in the past, since the spas date back to over two thousand years ago, a time when the Etruscans built them in an Ansa of the stream.
Free access and perfect in every season
One of the most fascinating features of these free spas is completely free access, a rare luxury for those who want to relax without spending anything. The water temperature is around 20 ° C, therefore, although it is not hot like other thermal sources, it is perfect for a refreshing bathroom in the summer, but the ideal period to enjoy its spring or the beginning of autumn, when the air is still warm and the natural context gives a magical atmosphere.

A historical jewel protected by the premises
The inhabitants of Colle Val d’Elsa are particularly jealous of the purity of the Caldane, considered an authentic archaeological find. The pools are surrounded by stone ruins and immersed between trees and woods typical of the Tuscan countryside. At one time, an ancient mill also stood in the surroundings, testimony of an era in which man exploited natural resources with ingenuity.
A little known, but unmissable place
Despite its charm and its millennial history, the Caldanes are not well known by the general public, which contributes to preserving its tranquility. Still, they represent an ideal stop for those who visit the Val d’Elsa, perhaps after a day spent exploring the historic center of Colle Val d’Elsa. For an even more suggestive experience, an evening bath under the stars transforms the place into a fairytale scenario, difficult to forget.
The beneficial properties of thermal waters
Also known as “Bagni di San Marziale”, the sources of the Caldane boast therapeutic properties known since the Etruscan-Roman era. The water, clear and rich in minerals, in particular calcium, is famous for its beneficial effects on the skin and was used in the past as a remedy for rashes and other disorders. Even today, immersing yourself in these waters means enjoying a natural and regenerating treatment.
A troubled story between destruction and restorations
The spas have experienced alternate events over the centuries. They were destroyed in 1260 by the Sienese troops, then reconstructed by the Colligiani in the mid -fifteenth century. A further restoration occurred in the nineteenth century, when the bottom of the tanks, once decorated with mosaics, was paved in stone. Two small secondary tanks were also made and an iron ladder added to facilitate access to water.
The Caldane di Gracciano represent a real jewel of the Val d’Elsa, a place that combines history, nature and well -being. That you choose to visit them for a moment of relaxation, to discover a little beaten corner of Tuscany or for a bathroom immersed in history, the experience will undoubtedly be unforgettable.
