The exciting farewell to Mohanmala, the elephant that saved the rhinos from poaching and became a hero in India

The Kaziranga National Park, in the Indian state of Assam, cries the disappearance of Mohanmala, its oldest elephant, estimated at around 90 years. Arrived in the park back in 1970, it was immediately recognized as a special animal: strong, courageous and capable of facing challenges that few others could have supported.

Over the decades, Mohanmala was an active part of the anti-branconing operations, accompanying the rangers in the most remote areas to protect Indian rhinos and other threatened species. Her natural calm, combined with a decisive character, allowed her to face dangerous situations without hesitation. For this reason, among the guardaparco was considered not only a work partner, but a real ally in the defense of nature.

The heroine of floods

One of his most remembered qualities was the ability as a tireless swimmer. During the devastating floods of the Brahmaputra river, Mohanmala managed to reach places inaccessible to boats, bringing people and animals to safety. For years the “park ambulance” was nicknamed, capable of transporting wounded or sick to the rescue centers and, when possible, also to bring them back once healed.

A unique link with his custodians

During his long existence, Mohanmala saw five Mahout (or custodians) pass by his own, who survived. With each of them he established a relationship of profound trust, becoming an integral part not only of the park team, but of the life of those who took care of it. Since 2012, on the advice of his custodians, he has been officially withdrawn from the active service and transferred to the Mihimukh field, where he spent a pension receiving care, food and daily attention.

The touching ceremony in his honor

Mohanmala’s death represents the end of an era. For over fifty years he has been silent witness of the kaziranga transformations, the battles won against poachers and tragedies brought by floods. Precisely for this reason the authorities of the park have paid tribute to her with an official ceremony, recognizing it as part of the Kaziranga family and as a symbol of a struggle that goes beyond the life of a single animal.

The park organized a moving farewell ceremony, which was attended by Ranger, veterinarians and members of the local community. The celebration included traditional rituals and moments of reflection, paying homage to Mohanmala’s courage and dedication.
