In recent years, the increases have made daily shopping one of the most demanding voices of the house budget, coming to absorb almost a fifth of the income of an average family. It is not surprising, therefore, that more and more consumers pay attention not only to what to buy, but also where to do it. The choice of the supermarket can in fact make a huge difference.
This is confirmed by the 36th edition of the annual investigation of Altroconsumowhich has compared prices and offers in over 1000 stores scattered throughout Italy. The result is surprising: a family of four can save up to 3,700 euros per year simply by directing the most convenient insignia and carefully selecting the products to be put in the cart.
Between March 2024 and March 2025, prices in supermarkets increased by 2.2%on average. This is not a dramatic surge, but the data confirms a constant trend: from 2021 to today, the cumulative increases have reached +26% in discount stores, +24% in supermarkets and +23% in hypermarkets.
Curiously, the discounts – while remaining the cheapest – are those who have increased the prices, thanks to a wider and quality offer.
However, considering overall, the difference between the various chains is remarkable and the same brand product can also cost the double depending on the store in which you buy.
But let’s see now the ranking of the most convenient signs.
The most convenient supermarkets
Among the traditional chains, the primacy belongs to Carrefour, which is positioned in the first place in the ranking of the product brand: here a family of four people can save up to 3.308 euros per year by choosing exclusively the private labels. However, remember that this sign is definitively leaving Italy.
Following the ranking sees:
Consider that in the rankings of Altroconsumothe 100 index indicates the most convenient chain, while higher values report on average higher prices. So the lower the index, the greater the savings.
In mixed spending – the trolley that combines branded products, private labels and cheap items – the most competitive chain is familiar (index 100), which however allows a more contained advantage, equal to 208 euros per year. Famila and Famila Superstore are also confirmed as the most convenient for those who prefer branded products, with a maximum saving of 506 euros per year. Behind them are Coop, Conad, Esselunga and Ipercoop, which remain on competitive levels, even if with lower margins.
Overall, supermarkets offer less shower saving opportunities than discount stores, but guarantee a greater variety of assortment and the possibility to choose between known and private quality labels.

The cheapest discount stores
On the discount front, savings can be much more consistent. Eurospin confirms the queen sign of “first price” products, with a maximum saving of 3,700 euros per year for a family, equal to almost 40% less than the national average expenditure. In second place we find Aldi (index 101), followed by in’s market and Lidl (index 102).
The ranking then sees:
Also in mixed spending, discounts are clearly distinguished: in the market leads the ranking with potential savings of up to 2,838 euros per year, followed by Eurospin (index 102) and Lidl (106). Here the differences between chains are wide and, above all, the economic advantage over traditional supermarkets remains evident, making the discounts the ideal choice for those who want to save on shopping.

Regional differences
The cost of spending in the supermarket varies significantly between the Italian regions. On average, a family spends about 7,250 euros per year, but in the north the prices are generally lower, with some regions where the expense does not exceed 7,000 euros. In the center and south, however, the costs are higher, with differences that can reach about 700 euros compared to the cheapest areas.
To dominate are the chains of the North, where the competition between insignia is more on. Marcon’s hyper Rossetto, near Venice, was the least expensive supermarket in Italy. Como, Verona and Bologna also offer remarkable saving margins: over 1,300 euros per year between the most convenient and dearest store.
In the South, however, the picture is very different: in Naples and Caserta the maximum savings do not exceed 50 euros per year. Sassari confirms the less economic city, with a minimum expense that does not drop below 7,410 euros per year.
How the investigation was conducted
The investigation of Altroconsumo He examined 1,150 points of sale distributed in 67 Italian cities, noting the prices between 3 and 31 March 2025. In total, about 1.6 million prices were collected, covering 125 categories of products that include food, personal care items, home and pets products.
To compare the different chains, Altroconsumo He used an index of convenience, in which 100 corresponds to the most economic sign or point. Upper values indicate on average higher prices, thus allowing you to easily evaluate which supermarket guarantees the greatest savings.
