Solar fountains for your garden: really or just decorative useful?

More and more present in the gardens, the solar fountains seem the perfect solution to give life to the water and make a small basin more welcoming. They cost little, do not consume electricity and are installed in a few minutes. But are they really useful, or are they only served to make a scene?

How a solar fountain works in your garden

A solar fountain is made of a few pieces: a photovoltaic panel, a pump and often some more accessories, such as interchangeable nozzles, LEDs or a small battery. When the sun hits the panel, the pump is activated and make the water sauté in your pond, tub or small pond. No electrical outlets, extensions, excavations or technicians are needed: in ten minutes it is ready for use.

On the market there are two main versions:

Both help to maintain hydrogen peroxide, an advantage for fish, plants and also to avoid the formation of stagnant algae. If your garden is already full of small solar lights, this can be the icing on the cake.

Not all solar fountains are the same

And here comes the critical point: an economic solar fountain can do its part, but only in a suitable context. A € 30 pump can be enough for a decorative mini basin, but it will be useless in a garden pond. The jet will be low, the water that is not very moved, and the effect – let’s face it – disappointing.

On the contrary, a fountain too powerful in a small basin will end up splashing anywhere, lowering the water level continuously. The risk? Having to top up the water every two days, especially in summer.

How to choose the right solar fountain

If you are thinking of installing a solar fountain in your garden, there are some important things to evaluate before buying. The first is certainly the size of your pelvis: a small fountain will be fine for a decorative tub or a a few liter pond, but if you have a larger pond, perhaps with aquatic plants or fish, a more powerful model will serve to ensure a minimum of movement and hydrogenation of water.

Another aspect to consider is the type of pump. The floating ones are perfect if you want a light jet and a somewhat playful effect: you can move them easily and change position according to the sun or wind. Instead, the immersed pumps, which are fixed on the bottom, are ideal if you prefer a stable jet, always in the same point. They work well even in the deepest basins.

If you like to create a particular atmosphere in the evening, or if you have children who have fun with water games, you could choose a fountain with integrated LEDs. The colored lights, especially at sunset or at night, really add a magical touch to the garden, without consuming a single watt from the electricity grid.

The power of the jet must also be chosen carefully: if you just want a Zen effect, relaxing, you will need a low and discreet jet. But if the goal is to oxygenate the water, especially in summer when algae grow faster, you will need a more powerful model, capable of really moving the volume of water of your basin.

Then there is the question of the integrated battery. Some models only work when the sun is directed on the panel. Others, however, have a battery that is loaded during the brightest hours and allows the jet of water to continue even when the sky is cloudy or in the evening. If you live in an area where the sun is not always guaranteed, this can be a very useful feature.

Finally, an element not to be underestimated is the ease of assembly. Many solar fountains are presented as ready -made kits, easy to install without the need for particular tools or skills. If you are not familiar with the do-it-yourself, focus on a simple and “Plug & Play” model, which you can arrange in a few minutes, perhaps only by connecting two cables and choosing the type of jet.

Better smaller or a powerful?

If your garden houses a small decorative pond, a floating fountain with LED can be enough to create a nice glance. Children love it and the effect is relaxing. For a wider natural lake, it serves a more robust pump, capable of raising the water even of one meter. This type of jet also helps to avoid the accumulation of algae, improving the quality of the water.

Do you have a medium -sized pond? The ideal is to find the right balance: a stable fountain, well centered, with a jet not too strong, so as not to make the water disperse. Alternatively, you can also install multiple small fountains, to obtain an interesting choreographic effect at low costs.
